Chapter #5
Naked and Mud-Covered
by: Unknown
Jessica assumes that country folk are usually known for their prudish ways and their kindly hospitality, so whoever lives in the run down old house below might help her get cleaned up and let her borrrow some clothes, and maybe even give her a lift back into town. She could see an old pick-up truck in the yard, so there was at least one automobile that appeared to be in working shape. On the other hand, the people living down the hillside might be some kind of scary inbred yokels capable of things Jess didn’t even want to consider, if she just showed up at their front door naked and covered head to boots in mud.
Jess finds a small path that leads down and away from the main trial, presumably down to the farm house below. She makes her way down the path timidly trying to cover up her mud-covered, naked body. Jess wanders past the signs of people having been on this little trail. She sees wrinkled pages from some old men's magazines laying around, and then comes across a small clearing with blackened remnants of a small campfire in the middle. She can smell the scent of urine from the nearby bushes, too.
The side trail ends at the fence to the yard with the clothes drying on the line, the pick-up truck, and an inflatable kiddy pool. there is a sign that reads NO TRESPASING! (sic) dangling high up on the fence and two of the boards are missing, leading right into some flower bushes in the back yard, which allows jessica a better view of the yard.
She doesn't see any signs of a dog, though she does see chickens wandering around, pecking at the ground. Jess also notices signs of a toddler in the family. There are the scattered toys one might expect of a young child laying here and there in the grasses and flowers of the front yard. This is reassuring to her, as there must be a young mother living there, and they usually have more human compassion than most people. She also spotted a long rubber hose on a spool next to the house. Perhaps Jess could use it to hose off the caked-on mud. Things seemed quiet, so Jess snuck her way further into the yard...
