Chapter #5

Miko Lee, a 26 year old Asian American.

What they ended up telling you came as a shock like no other. Expecting a name like Simon or Tony, or even Abdul. Not "Miko Lee." Miko sounding very much like a girls name. Discovering that sure enough, David's brain had indeed been put into the body of a woman. A 26 year old Asian-American woman at that. Who'd apparently suffered a brain aneurysm due to the impact of the crash that had left her all but dead. Meaning that your little brother had now lost his gender, his ethnicity, as well as 12 years of his life. Which was all but impossible to get your head around. Not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

Ending up doing both as you blurted out, "This is... This is crazy! You're telling me that David is now a girl? He's been living as a girl for two whole months?"

"Yes," your mother nodded. "That is exactly what we're saying."

Your father chiming in once more as he told you, "I know this is difficult to hear, and believe you me, when it first happened, we were just as shocked as you are. In fact, I still am almost every time I see him. But unfortunately this was the hand we were dealt... That David was dealt... and we've all just had to get used to it. Just as you will have to do. He may be coping remarkably well considering but he will still need your support."

Responding, "Of... Of course. He's my little brother... was my little brother... Of course I'll support him."

This addendum causing your mother to sigh. "Tim, him being your brother hasn't changed. It's just his physical appearance and how people outside of the family perceive him. He's still just the same fourteen year old boy deep down."

Very much hoping this was true as you pictured him in your head. Being quite skinny with dark brown hair that he'd recently died black after getting into the whole Emo scene. Having gone from a mildly annoying little brat who you used to play video games with all the time to a sulky teen pretty much over night. Not being able to imagine him as a girl.

Apparently he was though, and was somehow managing to cope as one, as they both duly explained.

"Really? He's been doing okay?"

"As well as can be expected yes," your mother replied. "He's been living in Miko's apartment, mingling with her friends, even doing her job. It's quite amazing really."

This certainly coming as a surprise to you. Having no idea how it was even possible. Seeing how David didn't know how to cook, how to do laundry, and was even worse than you when it came to cleaning his room. He'd only ever had like three friends as far as you were aware and they were all as weird and as socially awkward as he was. And he'd certainly never had any kind of job before.

Being informed that a side effect to the procedure was that David was now able to pluck things from Miko's subconscious (seeing how it was still mostly her brain). As well as retaining her muscle memory. Which was really helping him out when it came to surviving on his own. As well as the keeping hold of Miko's job. Which was something to do with web design. And, given your little brother's proficiency when it came to computers (being a bit of nerd in that respect) this was already in his wheelhouse. Luckily for him.

"And... And you guys still see him a lot?"

"Of course," your mother smiled. As if this was even in question. "We drop by every now and then to make things are okay and he regularly comes by the house. We just tell people that he's a old family friend and everyone seems to buy it."

"And her family?" you inquired. "Miko's?" Having not heard mention of any of them yet. "Do they know about all of this?"

Your mother's eyes dropped. Looking rather saddened for a moment. "Yes, but... Well, it's sort of complicated," she said. "Miko was raised alone by her mother and they weren't exactly on speaking terms when Miko died. I'm not entirely sure why though. She was Japanese and her unfortunately her English isn't so good. But she agreed to the transplant, signed the non-disclosure agreement and then took the compensation money and left. Which I suppose is understandable given the situation. It must be hard to look at your daughter and know that it is someone else inside."

"Yeah... Guess it must be," you agreed. Imagining that you were going to feel something similar when you saw him. Only the reverse. Whenever that might be.

Asking them both then where exactly he was. If he was here at the hospital now too.

He wasn't. Being apparently too busy with work. This and they felt it would be better for you to see him in the comfort of your own home, rather than in a hospital surrounded by strangers. That it would make things a little easier. Assuring you that he would definitely be there to greet you when you got home, same as your sister. David being just as eager to see you as she was. "They've both been so worried". Which you supposed was nice to hear. David, despite now being a woman and a decade older than you were, still found time to worry about his big bro. Imagining that he would have so much to deal with as it was that it left little time for anything else. What with his entire world having been turned upside down. Even if it was two months later. Two whole months that he'd had to get to grips with it while you'd just been laying there in bed, completely none the wiser.

Regardless of what had happened of course, you had to remind yourself that the main thing was that he was alive. No matter what petty fights and squabbles you might have had in the past he was still your little brother. You loved him no matter who or what he was, and you resolved to show it.

And so, after continuing to talk for the next twenty minutes (your parents filling in a few more of the blanks), Dr. Kerry appeared wanting to run a few tests. Meaning that your mom and dad would have to leave. Which saddened you quite a bit.

Still, they promised to return tomorrow, by which point Kerry was confident that you'd be able to return home. Which certainly came as good news to you. Feeling a strong urge to get up and start moving around again. Your arms and legs being like lumps of wood. Which you were given the opportunity to do an hour or so later. Being assisted out of bed by a nurse once the drugs had fully worn off. Engaging in a little exercise to get your limbs working again. Stumbling a little at first but soon you were back in the swing of things. It feeling good to be up and walking about again.

Though, even while doing this, your thoughts were still very much of David and what he'd become. What his life was like. What he'd really been going through these past two months while you'd been busy sleeping. Having his own apartment now, his own job, his own freedom (in a sense at least). All things that were still so far out of reach for you. And for David... not something you'd ever dreamed he'd have to deal with quite so soon. His life having changed so dramatically that it was a wonder he hadn't gone completely mad. David, much like you, not exactly being super popular or anything, but at14 years of age he'd had so much still to look forward to. Now though everyone he ever knew thought he was dead. Leaving him with nothing. Nothing but a life that was not his own and a body that was also not his own. Having to pretend to be something he was not. A gender he was not. This part of it actually being the most distressing. David is a girl. He's actually a girl. He's got tits and a... and a... a vagina. It was just so freaking weird. Hoping that when you actually saw him as 'Miko' rather than as the brother you knew, you'd actually be able to handle it. It being one thing to hear that he was a woman now. It was going to be something else entirely actually seeing it for yourself. Which, from the looks of things, you were about to do real soon.

You have the following choices:

1. You return home the following day.

*Noteb*
2. A week later and life with your brother is very different indeed.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
