Chapter #4

Shoehenge

by: Joe Random Author IconMail Icon
You wander amidst the titanic shoes, trying to make sense of them. Yes, it may make sense to go find a secure hiding place somewhere in the house, you're at least in a closet. You aren't in the middle of a hallway. And if you time it wrong, you could find yourself driving down a hallway as the family got home. Your car definitely wouldn't take someone stepping on it.

So instead you figure you'll try to glean as much information from the shoes as you can. It may not be perfect, but it's something to go on. Clearly, in this enormous world, you're going to be better off if you can find someone to help you. The closet might give you an idea of which family member to approach.

You wind your way past the high heels, heading away from the loafers. He knew there were two adults; he figured he'd try to get a read on the kids, figure out how big they were.

He came upon a massive pair of silver soccer cleats; they were almost as big as the mom's shoes, though not quite. He coughed a bit from the stench wafting from them; he wasn't sure whether they belonged to a boy or a girl, but they were certainly worn regularly. Based on the size of the shoes, this kid was probably somewhere around 13 -- not quite a grown-up, but getting close.

The second pair of shoes was a pair of sneakers, and while they were the size of a small warehouse, they were much smaller than the cleats. Maybe a seven or eight year old? He wasn't sure.

At this rate, it was going to take forever to surveil the closet, but Scott had an idea; maybe if he climbed up on one of the pairs of shoes, he could get a good look at the whole area. He'd just passed under the cleats, and one of their laces was laying on the ground; it would be an easy, if smelly climb. Or he could climb the smaller sneakers, but they had velcro closures; climbing them would be tough.

You have the following choices:

1. Climb the cleats.

2. Climb the sneakers.

3. A distant rumbling announces that the family is home.
