"Good news, Carly!" said her mother as she arrived home from school.
"What's the good news?" said Carly.
"Well," said her mother, "You remember how you always wanted a sleepover but were afraid your friends will laugh at you because you wet the bed?"
"Yeah?" said Carly, intrigued.
"Well," said Carly's mother, "I know somebody you can have a sleepover with who definitely won't laugh: remember my friend Penelope who you met at my birthday lunch last week?"
"Sure do, she's the one who told me about the fact that octopuses have three hearts" (Carly was interested in marine biology).
"Well, Penelope and her husband Mark have a daughter named Olivia, who's your age, and she wets the bed too! Mark and Olivia couldn't come to the party because he had to take her to the dentist, but I just heard from Penelope at work today that Olivia wets the bed, so would you like a sleepover with Olivia? Penelope says that they'll be available next Saturday."
"Are you kidding?!" said Carly, "I'd love to have a sleepover with Olivia! And I don't even have to worry about her laughing!!"
Next Saturday rolled around, and at two o'clock, there was a knock at the door.
Carly and her parents answered it.
It was a tall, rather podgy woman with blonde hair tied up in a messy bun, and a purple sweater and blue jeans, and next to her were a skinny man with black hair, glasses a red sweater and black pants, and a thin girl who looked about Carly's age, who had black hair in a ponytail and was wearing a white T-shirt, black shoes, white socks and a purple mini-skirt with pink flowers on it.
"Hello, Melanie! Hello, Carly! Hello, Pete!" said the woman.
"Hi, Penelope," said Carly's mother Melanie, "and you must be Mark and Olivia?"
"That's right," said the man.
"Do come in," said Pete, Carly's father.
Olivia walked in, carrying her overnight bag.
"Okay," said Mark, "her bedtime is 8:30, she will eat anything except strawberries, which she's allergic to and oatmeal, which she hates. We'll be here to pick her up at ten in the morning."
"Have a nice time," said Penelope.
And with that, Penelope and Mark left.
Carly's parents got a spare mattress and set it up for a bed in Carly's bedroom and Olivia plonked her overnight bag down on the mattress.
"Well, there's six and a half hours until bedtime," said Olivia, so what do we do now?
What happens now? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
