As the morning rolled through, as expected the first customers rolled through an elderly couple Saul was all to familiar with and he smiled as he happily greeted them. They were excited in turn to see him too and wondered about his adventures at the magic academy and while he stated and regaled them in his tales as well. Tomas was off to the side smiling by his brother. He was always so proud of him but part of him wished he never had to leave... it was a bit hard on him at first not waking up to see his big brother everyday but being awoken by his big brother was a nice moment starting off today. Tomas snapped back to it seeing his brother run by, "Hang on I'll get my Grimoire to show you what few tricks i learned" He said rushing back up to their bedroom leaving Tomas to pick up the banter. Soon Saul returned and gave the elderly couple a little light show before winking at his younger brother. Tomas's heart leapt from his chest feeling as though he was more so showing off for his little brother too a bit more. The elderly couple smiles as they walk out and purchase some of the old bread for feed, it was part of the couple's daily routine making them the Golden Crust's regulars however now came the hard part. How were they going to get some other townsfolk into their shop, "hey i wonder, can you...cook some bread with magic fire?" Tomas sheepishly asked, toe digging into the ground almost embarrassed to ask but Saul just simply pat his brother on the head, "well its as good as an idea as any if we're going to bring in anyone." Saul responded before to two got to work.
The two brothers made due, gathering the ingredients and kneading new bread to be made with wheat and yeast, Tomas worked hard as well even though his frail frame was lacking in strength he found it easier than usual and managed to somewhat keep up with his older brother albiet a bit slowly, Saul turned to him with pride. "You might have the makings to be the next best baker yet, alright lets try out your idea" Saul states. He holds out his hands near the flame and concentrates, he's not here to burn the bread but to cook it so it would take a bit more focus than just making fire. He takes in a deep breath, and the room is silent, Tomas was a bit spooked at how serious his brother was. Never has he felt such...pressure as if the room shifted along with his focused but soon he felt a shift in demeanor, Saul's eye's pop open and a spark is lit from his hand with blue magical flame. The fire flutters out turning the room a whole blue hue and begins to burn the bread. Saul focuses his expression turning to one of strain and before you know it the fire wanes and the bread dough rises and bends. Saul smiles finding a bit of inspiration in what he's doing, "maybe i can" as he begins to catch on , his focus slips and the fire burst out of control. "Oh SHIT WATCH OUT!!" Saul shouts as he jumps towards Tomas and protects his brother from the ensuing burst of flame. Luckily enough they used the wood burning stove for their cooking so the fire damage was no more than just a few sear marks on the stove. The bread however was burnt to a crisp, and the two brothers stared on in disappointment. "Oh...man i was so close...Tomas do we have any dough left." Saul says turning to his younger brother. "Hmm yeah..we have about half of both batches left." Tomas says still a bit shaken from the explosion but nonetheless excited. "Alright we'll try again.."
The second go round was much more successful, Saul had a good eye and most of the time it took one fail before he grasped something , one of the reasons why he was accepted into the academy being the fact he had this innate ability to learn so quickly from his mistakes. " Here we are" Saul said, the breads complete and with a blue crusted hue to them. They looked so different and pleasing to the eye that it might definitely catch the eye's of would be customers. "Alright now for the more important part... the taste test." Saul says, he looks to Tomas. "You ready?" Saul asks, Tomas nods "As ready as I'll ever be big brother...." As the two break off a slice and take a bite they find the flavor to be..different..infact delicious!! Both let out a sound of delight but restrain themselves from taking another, well almost as Tomas grabs another loaf and bites into it with a light nom. "Tomas!!..save that for the customers" Saul states as he forces the rest of that slice into Tomas's mouth. The boy chewed eagerly but nodded in agreement. With a slight pat on Tomas's chest the two leave to the front of the store, unaware of the slight activation of the spell he put on his brother the other night. The two slices made by him set in motion as the spell finally accepted Sauls's will or rather his unconscious will.
The two brothers began to announce the new bread and soon enough a few customers stopped by to try it out, and where wowed with he taste. The bakery found itself selling the first batch easily enough and the two brothers were back in the shop cooking up more, with the magic fire it made cooking them much faster and the flavor more blossoming but it wasn't long till Saul was exhausting his reserves. By noon they had to send everyone home so that Saul could recharge his batteries but not a moment to soon as their parents arrived home a wagon full of new wheat and confused faces. "Oh...hey mom ...hey dad...." Saul said tired in his chair. "Your not going to believe this.." Tomas added in with his oh so classic eager grin. As the two relayed what happened earlier in the day. The two parents were surprised, angry and applauded both of their children bringing them in for a hug. it turned out that this was a booming revelation for the two and well might be the key to putting them a fighting chance against their enemy the Duke's bakery company.
The boys were sent upstairs to rest as the parents took over , Saul slumping into his bed before he turned to see Tomas staring at him, his eye's glowed a bit again. as he stared and poked his brother playfully. "What does it feel like...to have magic?" Tomas asked curious. "hmm well from what i learned everyone has magic...but not everyone has the latent ability to use it. And that's what makes someone a mage" Saul states. "Actually...i been noticing something....has anyone told you..your eye's glowed...like this" Saul stated making his eye's glow a bit. Tomas was wowed as the steel silver eye's of his brother lit up like a candle before fading. "N-no...but wow i wished they did." .Tomas stated getting closer to his brothers eye before being pushed away. "Well...i think maybe...if you want. i want to see something." Saul stated , "but it'll have to wait till tomorrow before i use magic again, i don't wanna run myself dry". Saul said with a chuckle. "What happens if you do run yourself dry?" Tomas asks. "Oh..uh ..i die...basically" Saul says sheepishly. Tomas suddenly broke climbing atop his brother and pushing him into the bed, "h-hey" Saul was about to interject but Tomas kept up his antics. He wrapped his older brother blanket around him tightly, Laid down multiple pillows beside his brothers face and sat atop of him. "Tomas..what are-" Before Saul could finished he was shushed by his brother. "Sleep...Sleep...Sleep.." Tomas shouted lightly tapping his brother with a pillow. "Is this your way of preventing me from doing anything so i wont die?" Saul followed but before seeing his brother teary eyed and nodding. "Mmm.. yes..." Tomas said trying to fight back his tears, he just got back his big brother..he wasn't gonna lose him anytime soon.
Saul sighs before falling asleep infact falling asleep longer than he anticipated as everything so quickly fades to black, the weight on his chest getting lighting and strutting off.
what happens and when does he wake up? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
