"What a jerk!" Austin kicked a pebble, sulking to himself as he walked along the sidewalk. He had just been playing video games in his house when Jeremy, his thirteen year old brother came in and booted him off the TV, claiming 'bigger brother privileges'. To Austin, that sounded like bullcrap, but since Jeremy was nearly a foot and a half taller than him and could pick him up by the armpits and drag him outside, it didn't really matter what he thought about it.
The brisk fall air blew through his hair, causing him to shiver. He didn't have a chance to grab his jacket before leaving, so he was out here slightly cold. Sure, he could go back inside, but Jeremy would certainly give him grief about it. If only there was a way to turn the tables a little, and make him see what it would be like to be the little brother for a change. But, without a miracle, Austin knew that could never--
His thoughts were interrupted as his eyes caught a light streaking through the early evening sky. "Is that a shooting star?" Austin wondered aloud. He'd only heard about them before, never seeing one in person, and he thought it was especially weird to see one when it was so light out. Furthermore, there seemed to be something peculiar about just how this shooting star, if that's what it was, was traveling. However, he remembered what his mom had once told him about making a wish on a shooting star, and with all his frustration with his older brother boiling up inside of him, he figured it was worth a shot.
"I wish I could be the bigger brother for once, and let Jeremy get a taste of his own medicine."
Nothing seemed to change at first, and Austin felt his heart start to sink. "Shouldn't have gotten my hopes up," he muttered, looking back down at his feet and sighing. As he turned his head upward again, though, he dropped his jaw as he saw that the path of the object flying through the sky had seemed to shift slightly, now headed directly towards him! He began to feel a little frightened, but as it got closer, he realized that the object had been much closer than he had thought it was all along, and it really was very small, finally crashing into the ground about a hundred feet from him, leaving a small trail of smoke behind.
He ran over to the crash site, seeing the small crater that had formed around ... whatever it was. As he peered into the crater, he saw a small hard object, almost like a stone, at the center of it. It looked to be about as big as a quarter and twice as thick, but the most amazing thing about it was that it glowed a bright blue! It was almost entrancing, as if the light from the stone beckoned him to pick it up.
As he did so, he felt a small shock run up and down his arm, nearly dropping the object back down. However, the spark was more startling than painful, and after a few seconds, he began to feel a surging sense of energy build through him. Whatever the stone was, he thought, so far it was having some pretty neat effects!
Little did he know that those effects were just getting started...
