Earth is stuck by a giant meteor that wipes out almost all human life on the planet. The impact caused the end of the world as we knew as the impact caused destruction on a global scale followed by the nuclear winter caused by the debris being launched into the atmosphere. This creates another ice age that wipes out almost all of humanity and what life is left to struggle to survive but life always finds away. Unbeknownst to us the meteor had been carrying alien lifeforms of its own that had begun to evolve and grow (among other things).
About 250 million years later the earths landmasses smashed together to make one super continent called "Pangea Ultima". The earth's climate had become hospitable and life began to flourish once more. Neil was still stuck in his amber prison the building he was in long by decay and some luck that it didn't just collapse on him this point until a large tree a large tree fell on him. The amber shattered but thanks to some of the branches the didn't crush him but freed him. Neil woke with a fright. You crawled out from under the tree and found that world that you knew was gone now.
