Chapter #4

Something goes wrong

    by: Unknown
It didn't show up early. Nobody had thought about it, but yet it was always a possibility it could happen. What it could have caused to happen, nobody knew. Perhaps it was a rival organization who was bend on undoing the Nexus. Perhaps it was a college of Magi, not agreeing with the Nexus use of magic. Or it could have been the stupidest mistake ever made.

Lisa or Elizabeth didn't know about any of this, they were connected to the equipment and wouldn't realize a thing that would happen. As far as they were concerned they were far away and wouldn't up soon. However they wouldn't leave undamaged.

At first nobody noticed a thing, it was a fairly normal procedure. The employees who handled the equipment didn't realize a thing. What they didn't realize was that the computer program used for the transfer was altered. Not to the eye of a the normal user, only a skilled technician would see that a few alterations were made. Who or what caused it nobody knew. But then the circle was altered as well, one of the symbols. One footstep it took to rub out that tiny detail of the symbol. However, they would find out this much later.

When the employees noticed something went wrong, it was already too late. The equipment increased in temperature, it was sucking up electricity like it was a lollipop. Lights flickered around shortening out a few of the computers. Then the circles in the rooms acted up, they lighted like diamonds. Nobody could look at them without being dazzled by the bright light shining.

The employees ran around like mice running from a cat. Nobody knew what to do, except for the woman Lisa met before. While everyone was running around trying to protect themselves or the company, only she realized the lives of those two women in the rooms next to them. She ran up to the control panel and hit the emergency button. Normally this would reverse the changes made and shut down the equipment. However the emergency button exploded, knocking the woman backwards against a closet. The woman could only stare through the window in front of her, as a burst of energy was unleashed. The glass windows protected the employees from the burst and they could only stare what happened in front of them.

And then it was gone, completely gone. The woman still couldn't believe it as she held up a cup of coffee. Fifteen minutes had passed since "the accident" as management called it. The woman couldn't believe the moment she saw the burst of energy suddenly disappearing. She still remembered how the bright light suddenly turned transparent and then completely faded away. It was a mystery how it happened. The woman saw the mages in a corner still arguing how it could have happened. They couldn't explain how it happened, the circle was perfectly fine when they inspected it. They argued it must have been the equipment. The woman looked at the other corner and saw how the scientists were arguing as well. The equipment was fine as well, it must have been the magic circle. Both parties were blaming each other.

The woman shook her head. Nobody seemed to care about the patients inside the rooms. Except for her. The woman put her coffee cup down and walked over to the entrance to the room. She waited there patiently when a young guy in a hazmat suit came out.

"Place is clear madam." The guy reported. He was probably referring to the level of magic in the air. When someone like her, a non-mage, would enter the room with too much magic in it, the magic could affect her.

"What about the patient inside?" The woman asked.

"She's clear as well."

"Good, and how did the transfer went?" The woman asked.

The young man shook his head. "Not good, there was way too much energy put through. It almost killed them both."

"What exactly did happen?" The woman asked. The young man looked around before he told the woman. The woman looked at the man with her mouth still open in shock as he walked away to report to his superior. The woman then prepared herself as she walked into the room.

What did happen?
