The Novitiates

"I'm not going to be the only one infiltrating the Stellae, am I?" you ask.

"It rather depends upon how your initial exploration goes," says Hyde-White. "If it is a success—"

"Then I should scout from the edges. Use this first infiltration to prepare the ground for further infiltrations."

Hyde-White is holding a photograph, but he returns it to the folder and begins sorting through more material. "There is a teacher who would be perfectly positioned for what you describe—"

"I was thinking about the students. The new ones," you say. "If it works with them, I could use the recruit to catch this teacher for our second agent. Or someone else for him. Or he could take over my kid and I could move into—"

"Yes, I see what you mean." The professor sorts rapidly through his papers. "We do not have photographs of them, only basic biographical information. There are two girls, both Indian, one named Vidya and the other Punthali. Vidya is twelve, and Punthali is nine. There is also a boy, Korean, who is fourteen." He looks up from the folder.

"Is that all?"

Hyde-White shrugs.

You exhale slowly and deeply. It sounds like there is very little to work with, and even less to make a decision on. You almost give up on the idea of infiltrating through the new recruits. But your gut tells you that this is the right way to go. And though your gut has even less data than your brain to go on, it tells you to pick ...
