Sokka was in a serious funk when he went back home to the South Pole. While the war had finally been won and the Gaang were all heroes, he still rued the loss of his space sword in the final battle.
Sure, there had been enough ore left from that meteorite for Piandao to forge him a replacement, but it was the principle of the matter! The space sword Sokka had now wasn't the same sword that had seen him through the latter part of the war. It wasn't the sword that had saved his life on so many different occasions.
It wasn't his sword.
That, and...
"C'mon, Snoozles, quit sulking already," Toph grumbled, kicking her insulated metal boots on the floor of Sokka's igloo. It was quite warm inside the snow construct, and rather homey with wood paneling and floor tiles imported from the Earth Kingdom at a much reduced price, but Toph was still reluctant to go barefoot in the South Pole. "It's not like you don't have a sword anymore, right?"
Sokka sighed, glancing sidelong at his friend. Suki smiled weakly at her boyfriend, sitting across from him next to a bone-and-leather chest. She had an unidentified bundle sitting in her lap.
"I don't think he's really sulking over the sword," she said shrewdly, a twinkle in her eyes. "He lost it, yeah, but that was months ago, and he does have a new one. A sister sword, even."
Sokka averted his gaze, grinning sheepishly. He shrugged, long and fairly muscular arms flexing with the motion. Suki eyed this with rosy cheeks.
Toph hummed in the back of her throat, a thoughtful sound.
"You think so?" she said. "But then what's he being so moody about?"
Suki smirked, and glanced at Sokka's trousers.
"I think it's because he broke his belt buckle the other day."
Sokka's face reddened, and he tensed up.
"Don't be silly," he mumbled. "Of course that's not it..."
Suki smiled knowingly.
"Oh?" she said. "So does that mean you don't want a new one?"
Sokka perked up, and whipped his head around.
"A what one now?" he said, speaking quickly, his eyes wide.
Toph smirked, hearing the hint of excitement in Sokka's tone. That guy was such a sucker for stuff.
"A new one," Suki repeated, lifting up the bundle on her lap and hefting it playfully. "A brand new belt buckle, all for my big, strong boyfriend."
She unfurled the cloth bundle, allowing a glossy black metallic clasp shaped like the emblem of the Southern Water Tribe to fall to the tile floor. It rang on the stone, a high and clear sound that caught Sokka and Toph's attention.
The former stared in surprise at the gleaming, obsidian black buckle. His eyes were wide, and his jaw was slack.
"Suki..." he whispered, his voice low and soft. "...is that...?"
"Space metal?" Toph gaped, sitting up sharply. "Where'd you get that?"
Suki shrugged.
"I saw a shooting star the other night," she said. "While I was out... hem... doing my business. I saw it come down a few miles away, not too far out on the tundra." She gestured vaguely.
Sokka stared at his girlfriend.
"And you went and found this meteorite?" he said. "And made a belt buckle out of it?"
Suki made a dismissive gesture.
"It wasn't much," she said modestly. "I just figured it would be nice to do a little something for you."
She winked at Sokka, and mouthed:
"You know... since I'm the one who broke your last belt buckle."
Sokka reddened something fierce.
What next?
