Chapter #4

Reader's choice

Tommy's sneakers slammed down on the carpet with a loud "THUMP!"

His transformed friend recognized the sound now. Each step sounded like tons of weight slamming down and compressing the shag carpet.

"Crap! He's huge now!" Eric squeaked, unable to make any other sound.

He also made his first discovery about hamsters — the little rodents are near-sighted and colorblind. He noticed those facts as his new hamster vision blurred Tommy's approaching form, which Eric's eyes rendered only in shade of gray.

"Gear, what are you doing out of your cage?" Tommy's voice revealed his exasperation and bad mood.

"No! I'm not Gear!" Eric squeaked. "Gear went out the window!"

Eric gulped and tried to run when he saw his giant friend stooping to pick him up. The giant hand came into focus as it moved closer to him.

Tommy had trained Gear to enjoy being handled, but Eric had never gone through the training and squirmed and squeaked as his friend's fingers cradled him.

"What's wrong, Gear?" Tommy asked, noticing the hamster's agitated state. He also noticed that Eric had left, but he felt only satisfaction.

The hamster squeaked.

"Who needs Eric?" Tommy said and tried to sooth his little pet. "You're all I need, Gear."

"No!" Eric squeaked in such desperation his vocalization entered the ultrasonic range.

"I'm sorry we experimented on you, Gear," Tommy said. "It was all Eric's idea."

When the hamster still appeared agitated, Eric walked to the deluxe hamster cage that served as Gear's home. He figured the hamster needed some time to calm down.

"No! Not in there!" Eric pleaded. "Tommy, please! It's me!"

Tommy ignored the protesting hamster as he returned it to its cage. Ignoring the little hamster, which pressed its paws up against a panel of transparent plastic that served as one of the cage's barriers, Tommy decided to play some video games. He did glance at his phone on the off-chance that Eric might have texted with an apology.

Seeing no text, he grew angry again and vowed not to cave. "He will have to text or call me first," Tommy declared to himself.
