She needs to dry off outside first

"No, of course not," her mother replied. "You'll track water all over the floor! Wait here until you dry off. I'll go get you a towel."

And with that, her mother went inside, leaving Lizzy outside, practically naked, dripping wet and shivering slightly despite the summer heat. But with her tormentor and protector absent, one of her neighbors started to approach her.

It was that jerk, Jake. He made a nuisance of himself every day in class, and his habit of flipping girls' skirts up was the reason all of her classmates wore pants. Stuck in the position she was in, Lizzy didn't want to think what Jake would try with her.
