Mackenzie was nearly in panic-mode by now. No apparent access back safely inside, and mortified at the idea of anyone seeing her…like this! In flagrante delicto!
Surely, at least one of the drivers had to have noticed her, standing there naked, a few timid feet back from the edge of her driveway, trying to wave at them with one hand while she covered her chest with the other. But none of them had even slowed down! Well, there was the station-wagon, but they were just throwing newspapers to the few houses that still had subscriptions in her neighborhood.
Mackenzie decides to hide behind some low decorative shrubs right along the edge of the sidewalk outside her house. They form a slight ‘V’-shape that is ideal for her to peek out from under, and she surveys the neighborhood beyond her yard, pondering how she can get back inside her own house; preferably with the barest minimum of total humiliation.
Peeking through the bushes at houses across the street from hers, it becomes even more apparent to Mackenzie that more early-risers are starting their days. This inevitability is terrifying to her, as hope of getting back inside her own house without anyone seeing her dwindles.
Peering out toward her next-door neighbor to the left of her driveway, Mackenzie notices the flag that the owner, Mr. Hoffman, flies by his mail box. Both Hoffman and his wife are big, crude people, and they always seemed to erupt into shouting matches whenever she would cross paths with them. That flag, though! She hated to think what her neighbor would do to her if he caught her running around naked, stealing his stupid flag. But it would give her SOME small amount of coverage than trying to hide her dainty bits with only her arms.
Squicked-out at the idea of Hoffman seeing her buck naked, Mackenzie frantically gazes through the bushes at the property to the right of her driveway. She doesn’t see or hear anyone doing anything over there yet, which sort of comforts Mackenzie. She’d feel like a trapped deer if she had to try to keep peering out at both neighbors houses for fear of being seen! Then, she sees it! One of those passing cars was throwing newspapers up the driveways of subscribers. And apparently, her neighbors the Greene's to the right still read the paper! “Well, they’ll just have to miss today’s edition. If I can get to that newspaper, I’ll try to fashion some quick coverage from the pages so I won’t feel so totally exposed.”, Mackenzie considered to herself, naked and kneeling with the sun coming up and people's days starting.
