A shrill squeak and the feeling of something furry brushing past her ankle made Mackenzie look down in time to see a rat scurry past her foot. Letting out a shriek, Mackenzie jumped away from the offending creature while simultaneously kicking out with the foot it was near, sending the rodent flying across the shed. Landing across the shed, the rat let out a frightened squeak of its own before darting out of sight, not wanting anymore to do with the human that had just punted it.
That would have been the end of that debacle, had it not been for where Mackenzie had jumped. Away from the rat had put Mackenzie's backside against a wall of the shed, directly underneath a shelf. As the thin wall of the shed shook from the sudden impact, Mackenzie heard the sound of metal scraping against wood directly above her.
Looking up, Mackenzie saw the edge of a metal can pitching over, knocked from its precarious balance on the shelf. In an instant, Mackenzie found her situation made so much worse than it had originally been as-
