While on the throne, you awaited your breakfast patiently. It was not like you would be bored or anything. You would always be entertained watching the tiny servants scurrying around on the floor, doing what they could for their giant queen. Despite being only an inch tall on average, they were dedicated to their queen. Even more so than their giant counterparts. You knew the reason for this dedication. They wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for you, but that’s a story for another time.
You notice one of them jumping up and down near one of the columns. This catches your attention, and you get up to investigate the servant’s frantic jumping. The servant stopped and turned around as you approached him. You stopped within a few inches of him, making sure that you weren’t too near so you wouldn’t accidently frighten him. You then lower your hand to the ground and your fingers gesture to the miniscule servant to climb on. He initially seemed reluctant to climb on, but he relented and climbed onto the palm of your hand. You understood this reluctance quite well. Giants can be terrifying to tinies. Holding a tiny in your hand would require an enormous amount of trust between you and the tiny.
You raise your hand to be about level with your eyes so you could get a better look at the little servant. He appeared to be in his early twenties, with short black hair and was dressed in the standard butler’s outfit. He appeared to be covered in sweat, as if he had been tirelessly working for hours.
“What is your name, little one?”, you ask the tiny servant. You unintentionally made yourself sound more commanding than you would like to be, and it caused the little man in your hand to shiver.
“M-my name? It’s... Joshua, y-your highness”, the now-named servant stuttered.
“It is nice to meet you, little Joshua. May I ask why you were jumping up and down near that column?”, you asked.
“I was polishing it, your highness. I was jumping so I could polish it as much as my size would allow. Actually, if it is alright with you, your highness, could you continue to hold me in your hand so I can polish the rest of this column? As you can see, I am a bit too short to polish this entire column. But with your gracious assistance, I will have this column shining in no time”, Joshua replied.
“All of it? But, sweetie, even with my help, it would be too much work for you. You would get tired before you would get even 5% of this column polished. You must not push yourself so hard. I can see you look very tired, already. Why don’t I bring you back home so you can get some rest?”, you say with a concerned voice.
“But your highness! As your servant, it is my duty to serve you in any way possible. I will not let my small stature prevent me from serving you. I appreciate your concern for my condition, but I still... have plenty of energy... to...”, and just like that, Joshua fell asleep from exhaustion.
“Oh, my!”, you blurt out in surprise upon seeing Joshua’s sudden collapse. You thought he looked adorable curled up in your palm while fast asleep. You felt a strong urge to cradle him in your arms as if he were your child.
The sounds of squeaking wheels signalled that breakfast was near. Your breakfast was wheeled in by a giant maid. You return to your throne and sit down. The maid revealed a bowl of vegetable soup and a plate of scones. You lick your lips at the sight of the delicious scones. They were one of your favourites and you would often dunk them into the soup for extra flavor. “The chefs appear to have done another tremendous job today. Please tell them that they have my thanks”, you say sweetly.
“Of course, your highness. I will relay your compliment to them”, the maid responds. She then proceeds to lay out a selection of knives, forks and spoons. The maid then hands you a napkin and you place it on your lap. “Thank you, sweetie”, you say to the maid. “You are welcome your highness”, the maid responds.
As the maid is about to leave, you bring out your palm containing Joshua and say, “Excuse me for a moment, dear. Sweet, little Joshua here has tired himself out. Can you please bring him to the village, outside so he can get a good night’s sleep?”
“Yes, your highness!”, the maid responds. You gently shift your hand, allowing the sleeping Joshua to slowly slide onto the palm of the maid. The maid takes a bow and exits the throne room. You take one of the spoons. It was a round one used specifically for soup. You lick your lips again as you prepare to dig in.
What you didn’t realize was that one of the maids had fell into the soup and was fighting for her life. She had been clearing out some of the leftover vegetable pieces on the chopping board when one of the chefs accidently knocked her into the bowl of soup. She was completely coated in the soup, so she was indistinguishable from the bubbling soup. She couldn’t even scream for help as the soup would flow into her mouth every time she opened it, which burned her mouth. Up until now, she hadn’t been paying attention to her surroundings as she was trying to avoid drowning. She looked up and saw you raise your spoon. She realized she was going to be eaten alive, just like her parents. She began to swim even more frantically with tears in her eyes, desperate to find something to cling on to, but the chopped vegetables were too light for her to hang on to. She could feel the last of her energy fading. She could no longer remain afloat in the soup. In a last act of desperation, she screamed. “HELP ME!” indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
