How about the alien entity known as the Role Exchanger? It could pay Wilkinson a visit and experiment with its employees and the other residents of the town as part of its 'task' of studying humans. Everyone would of course be aware of the swaps that occur and have to adapt after having their physical traits etc. swapped.
