Chapter #4

The Troop of Tourists

by: American Hero Author IconMail Icon
Soyaka strolled down the mountain, humming a tune as she crunched her lolipop and spat out the stick (though she made sure that it landed in a secluded spot. The clean-up crews would get rid of it, but there was no reason to just leave garbage lying around where everybody could see it). Her dragon-form's tail swished from side to side with every step, stirring up a strong breeze that made the trees shake and wave like a green ocean. She chuckled at the sight. Her creators probably meant for her to topple buildings with her tail-swipes, not make trees shake in the wind.

"Well, to heck with what they want," Soyaka quipped.

A sudden loud crackle echoed through the air, cutting through the serene afternoon. Soyaka started at the intrusion, but quickly turned to a "cliff face" near the mountain she was descending that looked oddly smooth and flat for a natural feature. Mostly because it wasn't. It was really a speaker of ridiculous size, crafted to blend in with the island. It was how the humans who helped keep her island home running communicated with her when she was out and about.

After the crackle of static subsided, a crisp male voice cam through. "Look alive, kid! We've got a new boatload of tourists pulling into port. Should be a normal crowd, so work your magic, alright?" One could almost hear him smiling, even through a speaker.

Soyaka giggled and sketched a salute. (Not that the speakers could see her--she'd made it abundantly clear that she didn't want the humans keeping excessive tabs on her). "Right away, Jim!" she replied. Her smile was even wider than before--Soyaka loved when the tourists came, especially when they brought children. She was a complete sucker for kids; heck, that was mostly why she'd just settled in on Earth rather than wreck the place.1 With a laugh, she flapped her wings and took to the air, heading for the dock on he eastern part of the island.

She touched down in the reception area--an open field uphill from the beachfront--just as the crowd was getting off the boat. She made an easy landing, flapping her wings just before impact to slow herself down, but thanks to her three hundred feet, she still made a resounding Thud! upon impact, and even shook the ground a little, which scared the crowd of tourists quite a bit. They yelped and cringed back out of instinct, though they mostly relaxed upon recognizing her. (She still got a few annoyed looks, though).

"Sorry about that, everyone!" Soyaka announced, waving at them. With a snap of her fingers, she shifted to her human form. "Just figured I'd welcome you all to our island! I am the main attraction, right?" She added, chuckling. "Now then, who all's here, anyway?" Carefully, Soyaka sat down before the crowd--which also shook the ground, and she couldn't help but laugh at that--to get a better look. There was the usual mish-mash of ages, races, men and women...but it looked like certain people in the crowd seemed especially eager to see her....

Footnotes
1  (1) This was a feature installed by her alien creators more or less on an idle whim; figuring that a city-smashing titan who liked kids was nicely ironic. Needles to say, their reaction upon learning that this backfired consisted mostly of words that were four letters long, and spoken at great volume.
