The next day, Madison went to the gym at the same time she normally did. When she got there she was happy to see that he was jogging next to an open treadmill. Madison jumped onto the machine next to him and they started going through the normal small talk that they usually engaged in, classes, friends, just talking to pass the time since they were not great friends yet. After a while, Madison, somewhat awkwardly, but in an acceptable manner since they were both tired while running, managed to stick in something about Cassi.
''Hey so I heard my roommate Cassi is in your lit class. She says you're always pretty funny about the dry stuff that you guys have to read.''
''Oh yeahh, Cassi, yeah we sit near each other, she's really fun.''
''Yeah! I love being roomies with her, would you ever be interested in swinging by our room to hang out, or maybe grabbing dinner with her sometime?''
''Umm, would it just be me and Cassi, like are you trying to set us up?''
''Ha, yeah I guess I am.''
''Wow, you know I just don't think of her that way, she's not really my type.''
Madison knew what that meant, coming from someone who worked out as much as he did. He didn't want to date someone who was putting on as much weight as Cassi. She had no idea what she was going to tell Cassi, but that wasn't going to be fun. But she had the situation at hand that she had to deal with, making sure she didn't get awkward with Chris, so she continued the conversation.
''Oh yeah totally, it's fine, I just figured I would ask since you guys were in class...and I know both of you, no worries.''
''Did she ask you to do this?''
''What? Nooooo. I just was curious. No harm, right?''
''Yeah, I guess, he what are you doing later tonight?''
''Umm, studying.''
''Cool, well if you get bored you should call me.''
Madison probably assumed he knew that was a lie, but she almost wanted to call her out after he was about to invite her to hang out after he shot down her friend. She replied,
''Do we even have each other's numbers?''
''No, I guess not, hey hand me your phone.'' Madison without thinking about pressed pause on her treadmill, and handed it to an already stationary Chris, who punched in his number.
''Okay, well you have it now.''
Madison didn't realize this, but she had a list of things she now had to deal with, most important being letting Cassi know Chris was a no go. But additionally, she wondered what was going on with her and Chris.
Madison came back to the room, and Cassi was waiting for her.
''So how did it go?''
''What, not going to let me go shower first?''
''Come on, did he show any interest?''
''Cassi, I'm really sorry...''
