More Changes, Right Away

Math teacher Erik Jackson couldn’t imagine where this magical-seeming device had come from. Silently thanking whatever god or devil had crafted it and allowed it to fall into his hands, he turned the dictaphone over and over in his hands, but it couldn’t have been more nondescript. It didn’t seem to have a battery compartment, or any plugs or ports that would allow for recharging.
Maybe it has a limited lifespan, he thought, and decided that perhaps he should hurry up and make some more changes while he had the chance.
He clicked the record button, held the dictaphone close to his mouth, and said very quietly, “My students will not pay attention to me talking into this dictaphone, including right now.” A few had looked up when he started talking, but by the time he’d finished the sentence, they were all back to having their noses in their textbooks.
His first thought was actually to change his own past -- make it so he hadn’t blown out his knee in a basketball game in his senior year of high school. He’d been recruited by a number of major universities, and everyone told him that he was a cinch to go pro -- that obviously would have made his life a lot different. He certainly wouldn’t be working as a math teacher here...
...and he wouldn’t have wound up with this dictaphone, he realized.
It seemed safer to stick to other people, as he’d already done in changing the manner of dress of all the girls in his classroom. He wondered if what he’d said had made every high school girl dress like this, or if it had just affected this school. The thought of intentionally altering all the females in the entire world definitely appealed to him, but he worried a bit about the effects of that, same as if he changed his own life.
