"Nicolas, look at me," she said.

Nicolas turned his frown toward her and crossed his arms in front of his chest, "I don't like getting yelled at by old ladies."

"Forget that. Didn't your parents foretell my arrival? You should already know this."

         "Obviously not."

"I am Natasha Moongold, Empress of Magic. Yokels call me "Head Witch," she spat. "I am the youngest Empress that has ever lived, but I deserve no less respect than those who came before me."

"Sure, whatever. What does that have to do with me?"

"When my predecessor was murdered, her protector suffered the same fate. He was tricked by the evil Guild of Logic and Science." Her eyes glowed red, but she brought herself back under control. "At the moment each of them were killed, their powers and skills were transferred to us. You are the Secret Keeper, my protector. You are descended of other secret-keepers. Your parents should have told you when the amulet began to glow. That is how they knew you'd been blessed.

"You're a nut. I don't have any amulet. I'm just a nerd in high school who thought a pretty girl actually wanted to be his friend. Wow, was I stupid."

Nicolas turned and started walking, but Natasha grabbed his shoulder and spun him around. He knocked her hands away and stared at her.

"I was drawn to you. My family moved over three hundred miles because you are mine. Didn't you feel the connection? You walked right up to me on my first day of school and walked me to class. Why?"

"I walked you to class because Mrs. Hermeties told me to. It was my job to escort you. I got credit for one hour of community service for it."

Natasha pushed her long, brown locks from her face. "It changes nothing. The old woman did not recognize me until you allowed it."

"How could you be invisible? People see you all the time at school."

"She saw me, but she didn't recognize me. I was just another girl, sitting under an oak tree reading a book, until you told her who I was. In fact, you shouted it."

The bell rang. Lunch was over and all of the students who'd come out to enjoy the last of the warm, autumn days headed back inside. Nicolas turned and stalked after them without a glance at Natasha.
