Jessica opened her eyes, it was about eleven thirty at night and staying a sleep was difficult to say the least. She kept thinking about her ex-husband. She turned a light on and took a long look at a picture of him, with a slightly slimmer her.
Richard was a commercial pilot. About a year ago, he had left her for another woman and moved halfway across the country. Since then she had started work and had been raising the two girls on her own.
Judging by that alone he sounds like a monster. That’s not the case. Richard and Jessica’s marriage had never been a good one, when they started dating it was never meant to be serious, but one night they forgot to use protection. About two months later Jessica told him Haley was coming. He proposed on the spot. They got married before Haley was even born.
There marriage had its good times, but even at its best they both knew they didn’t love each other. They tried to fall in love, the last ditch effort was a second honey moon, leading too Annie. But finally they had to admit it wasn’t getting any better. A year after that he met another pilot, and they had a very amicable divorce. Richard emailed his daughters daily, called on the weekends, and visited at least once a month, sometimes staying a day or two in the guest room.
He paid a third of his salary to her in the form of alimony, but it was his idea. He didn’t need it, being a pilot for a commercial airline and the National Guard, plus married to another pilot, he still lived very comfortably. Some men might not have been willing to give that much, he wasn’t willing not too. He even freely gave her the house.
She respected him, cared for him, but wasn’t in love with him. And he felt the same way.
Besides, she had started work again. While they were married she finished her degrees, in graphic design and webpage design. With the money she made from that plus alimony, she was hardly broke, and since she chose her own hours she could still be involved with her kids. It wasn’t like she didn’t have other support, she had a cousin and a brother living in the same town, happy to do anything for her.
Still, she felt like crap at the idea of being a single mother. She hated the idea of divorce, she knew it was the right thing, but here she was. Alone. It had hit her hard a few months ago, and that was about when she started baking so much. She always baked a lot, it had always made her feel good to create something for others to enjoy, and recently that meant more than ever.
Jessica got out of bed, wearing nothing but her underwear. Her panties were tight and wrinkled, stretching around her new hips and expanding rear. Her bra was no longer hidden by a shirt, now anyone could plainly see it pushing over the cups. Jessica grabbed her bathrobe and put it on, not out of modesty, she didn’t care if her girls saw her naked let alone in her underwear, but it was a cool night.
Jessica slipped on her house shoes and silently headed out the door. She walked down the hall way, and out of ritual, she checked on her girls.
First was Annie. She pushed the door open, and went in quietly, careful not to wake her. On her dresser was a photo taken of her a few months ago made at the mall. In it Annie was still the thin, even petite, little girl in bright pink over-alls. She didn’t fit in them anymore, she out grew of them a while back. The last time she tried to wear them she only got one button on fastened, the other suspender hung loosely over her shoulder, her belly still pressing out against the fabric, demanding more room.
Before then Jessica had been in denial, but after she knew her daughter needed a new wardrobe she had to face it, her little girl was getting pudgy. Now she was getting even bigger. She took one look at her daughter, her stomach sticking straight up, gently moving as the butterball breathed.
Jessica snuck back out of the room silently. She then headed down the hall to check on Haley.
Before she got to the door she watched Haley come out. In the dark light he couldn’t see her very well, just the outline of her and her long night shirt. They both jumped when they saw each other.
“Hey, Haley, what are you doing up this late?” Jessica whispered.
“I just woke up really thirsty. I figure I’ll go down and get a glass of milk.”
Jessica smiled, “Well, g’night again.”
“G’night again.” Haley nodded and they parted ways.
Jessica went back to bed to try and get some sleep. Tomorrow was another day.
