Settling on Alex's name and hitting the "call" button, you wait for Alex to pick up the phone, which he does after four rings. "H-hello?"
"Hey, Alex, it's John, your parents' friend. Listen, do you mind if I stop by your place? I've got something for you that I know you'll really enjoy." You waited for an answer, an uncomfortable silence starting to linger. "Alex? Ya there?"
"Y-yes," he finally responds. "Okay, I'll be out in front of my house."
"Great, I'll see ya in fifteen minutes." Flipping your phone shut, you put it in your pocket and start walking to your car. Traffic is light, so you actually arrive at Alex's house in thirteen minutes, seeing the skinny fourteen year old sitting on the front porch waiting for you.
"Hey, Alex," you call out as you turn off the engine of your car and step out of it, walking over to him. "How've you been?"
"Okay, I guess." He barely tilts up his head, and you can tell that he's a little unsure of why you're here.
"Good," you say, shifting your weight from foot to foot. "Listen, I wanted to give you to be the first to try this formula I've been working the last three years on." You pull the plastic container out of your pocket and hand it to him. "If my calculations are correct, anyone who drinks this will become omnipotent, and have the powers of a god!"
"A god?" Alex brushes the hair out of his eyes and takes the container, looking at it questioningly, shaking it lightly from side to side and watching it slosh in the container.
"Yes, exactly," you beam, trying to sound confident. "I thought you'd be the best person to test it out on, as I know you'd have a lot of creative ideas on how to use your powers."
He looks up at you skeptically, but something in his eyes seems to indicate that he believes in you. "O-okay, John. I'll try it, as long as you say it's safe."
You nod. "It's as safe as drinking anything else. Worst case scenario, you might have a slight upset stomach for a few hours. But even the chances of that are low."
Shrugging, Alex pops the top off of the container and brings it to his nose, sniffing it slightly. Apparently unfazed by whatever he smelled, he then brings it down to his lips, pouring it into his mouth. He lets it sit on his tongue for a moment before swallowing, wrinkling his nose slightly. "Wow, that's more carbonated than any soda I've ever had. Very tingly."
"Go ahead," you say as you motion with your hand. "Try it out. Think about something you want to change, about yourself, or our surroundings, or even me, if you want."
Standing up, he looks around, trying to find something that would be useful to test it on. Seeing a squirrel running around in the yard, he closes his eyes, appearing to be concentrating hard at the squirrel, then opens them again. You look back and forth between the squirrel and Alex, not noticing anything different. "Uh, what did you wish for, Alex?"
Before he could answer, the squirrel runs up in between the two of you, his eyes darting between you both. "Hey," you hear a squeaky voice that seems to be coming from the squirrel itself. "Do you two have any acorns or nuts on ya?"
Your mouth drops open, stunned. "Wow! Alex, I'm guessing you did that?"
Alex slowly nods, seemingly as stunned as you are. Looking back down at the squirrel, he kneels down. "No, little squirrel, we don't."
"Rats," the squirrel says. "Well, let me know if you find any." He then quickly scampers off, around the corner and out of sight.
"So I guess the formula works!" You say with a laugh. "Awesome!"
Alex grunts in the affirmative, still looking stunned. "I... I can't really believe it. This is... this is something I've kinda always dreamed about."
Smiling, you pat him on the shoulder. "So what are you gonna do next with your powers?"
"Well..." Alex thinks for a moment before looking back up at you. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
