At first it felt awkward with 'Tabitha,' knowing that the mind of your girlfriend resided somewhere inside her. But her openness and trust for your family helped you get past that - and eventually you were able to mourn Allison as truly gone (aided by the fact that all your friends thought she was in fact dead).
It was nice to enjoy a more relaxed relationship with your 'sister' for awhile. Since her tweens Tabitha had become more irritating and antagonistic toward you. This version of Tabitha didn't have all that baggage, so it was a sort of fresh start.

Unfortunately, even without memories to draw on, Tabitha began to forge her personality and feelings based on the way other's expected her to act. Her friends helpfully told constantly what she liked and didn't like, and what her behavior 'should' be. Your parents encouraged this now that they saw a chance to get their daughter back. And Tabitha's own writings - diary, facebook, emails - gave her a roadmap for her 'old' life.

So after a couple months, your relationship with her had degenerated to something similar to what it had been.

Then one afternoon, Tabitha tripped on the bottom stair, banging her head. You ran over to her in a panic.

"Tabitha, are you okay?" you yelled, afraid of what a head injury could do.

"Uh, I'm good," she replied groggily.

You helped her to her feet and walked her over to the couch. She seemed like she was in a daze so you hovered over her, concerned.

"I'm okay!" she said in an irritated tone. "Just leave me alone!"

Reluctantly you left her, though you kept an eye on her the rest of the day. Tabitha didn't say anything about it to your parents and pretended that nothing was wrong. But it seemed to you that she was more subdued and quiet.

Over the next few days you caught her giving you odd looks, but you didn't call her out on it. She was a little nicer to you, but overall kept her distance.

Finally, one night after your parents had gone to bed, you heard a knock at your bedroom door. You opened it to see Tabitha standing there.

"What's up?" you asked, curious what she was doing.

"Can I come in? she asked in a nervous tone.

"Sure," you said, motioning her in.

She walked in and sat down on the end of your bed. She sat there quietly for a minute. Her body language was tense and you could tell she wanted to say something.

"Are you alright?" you asked, starting to wonder what was going on.

She took a deep breath. "Tim, what happened to me? What did they do at the hospital?"

Now growing nervous yourself you responded "Uh, you hit your head pretty hard and they had to do brain surgery."

She shook her head. "No, tell me the truth." She looked you straight in the eye. "I know I'm Allison. They somehow turned me into Tabitha didn't they?"

You were too stunned to speak at first. She pressed you for an answer. "All my memories came back when I fell the other day. I know who I am. I remember my life up until the wreck, then waking up and not knowing anyone. Everyone told me I was Tabitha, and that's who I've learned to be over the last few months. But now I know that's not who I really am - I had 17 years as Allison!"

She forced you to give in and you eventually gave her the whole story - including the deal to have her live as Tabitha.

"So even if I had remembered who I was, I would have had to pretend to be Tabitha?" she asked in dismay.

"Yes," you said uncomfortably. "In public, anyway. Both families knew the truth. But now we can tell them and at least you can be yourself here."

She gives you a sharp look. "Why, what's the point? Everyone has accepted me as Tabitha, even my family. I remember how everyone treated me the first couple weeks. I don't want them to act like I'm handicapped or an invalid - or even worse, some kind of freak! I'd rather just be Tabitha..."
