As Baloo thought about how he was going to get his fish, he heard some leaves rustle. He could see a head poking out from them in the distance. He couldn't quite make out who the head belonged to, but he assumed it was a hunter who was trying to hunt him down and make a winter coat from his pelt.
"Oh, no! It's a hunter! He's come to get me!" shouted Baloo, and he trembled in fear, covering his eyes. Just then, the figure cleared from the leaves. It was a ten-year-old man cub accompanying his four-year-old brother.
"It's not a hunter, it's us!" said the man cub. Baloo recognized his voice and uncovered his eyes. The two man cubs were none other than Mowgli and Ranjan.
"Little Britches! And Littler Britches! Is that really you?" asked Baloo. Baloo had hardly recognized the two man cubs in the new clothes they were wearing. Usually, all Mowgli ever wore was a red loincloth, and all Ranjan ever wore was a blue loincloth, but as it had been an unusually cold winter in India, their parents made them wear warm clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long-legged pants, and shoes to protect their feet.
"Of course it's us, Papa Bear! We're just wearing new clothes since it's unusually cold. Ranjan and I got all our chores done, so we decided to visit you. What are you up to?" Mowgli asked Baloo.
"Well, since winter's unusually cold this year, I need to hibernate." Baloo told Mowgli and Ranjan.
"Hibernating? What's that?" Mowgli asked Baloo.
"It's when I go to sleep for the whole winter. Now, what I need to do is gather three months' worth of food, starting with these fish." Baloo told Mowgli and Ranjan as he pointed to the river below.
"The problem is, they're too far down in the water, and I'm not a very strong swimmer. Do you two think you can help me? I'll give you a quarter of what I gather for your troubles. You wouldn't want ol' Papa Bear to starve, would you?" Baloo asked Mowgli and Ranjan.
"Well, we certainly wouldn't want you to starve. What do you say, Ranjan? Should we help ol' Papa Bear?" Mowgli asked Ranjan.
"Yeah, let's help Papa Bear!" exclaimed Ranjan.
"Great! I knew I could count on you two!" exclaimed Baloo.
How do Baloo, Mowgli, and Ranjan decide to get the fish at the bottom of the river?
