Chapter #4Our Apathetic Hero Pt. 1 by: Unknown You walked out of school triumphantly after just barely passing your test with a 65. All that late night cramming and energy drinks really did the trick. Being a delinquent wasn’t the exact lifestyle you were shooting for but getting into stupid adventures that sometimes ended at the local police department were the only things that made you forget about your families dire situation. Your parents only moved to this awful country in the first place because after that incident with that massive digimon… the D-Reaper was it? Well, anyway after that whole incident property costs had gone to record lows in Japan. Obviously this was in part due to the fact that other digimon roamed the area and were seen as a potential threat to the human populace. Maybe humans just feared them, and after a massive one of them practically swallowed the whole city who could blame them. Anyways your life was far from perfect. Your parents worked multiple crappy jobs that pretty much only raked in enough to put SOME food on the table. When your father wasn’t working his ass off he would drink.
This wasn’t a particularly bad thing, he was a happy drunk, much to your relief but you know you’ve reached a new low when you have to walk your drunken father home at two in the morning on a Friday night. Your mom didn’t do it because she was usually to exhausted from working all day. You didn’t blame them really, their lives kinda suck. And you know full well that you will probably end up in a similar position as them when you get older, so you’ve gotta have as much fun as you can now. You’re no doctor or lawyer. Your philosophy is ‘if you feel like doing it, do it.’ That philosophy has usually ended with a police officer sternly talking to you about your bad decisions. You never did anything too criminal; thankfully, just stupid teenager ‘disturbing the peace’ type stuff. This sometimes led to you getting a fine though, which sucked because you were forced to pawn some of your stuff off to pay for the fines. You lost a Nintendo 64 and your copy of Call of Duty to those bullshit fines.
Most of the world has rid itself of digimon… besides this hell hole of a country. Most of the other countries around the world were able to hunt them down and send them back to the digital world where those abominations came. Again, maybe it wasn’t their fault, maybe it was us humans who are the problem. Being scared of something we don’t understand. You just know if it wasn’t for these digital freaks running around you wouldn’t be in this country right now and if you ever earned… or stole enough money to get out of this place you’d do it in a heart beat. You’d also heard horror stories about digimon from some of your friends, actually here comes one of them now. Approaching you, just stepping out of the local barber was your best buddy Miko. He was your partner in crime… and disturbing the peace. You two often played pranks on the jocks of the school, one time you both slipped a few rats in the head cheerleaders locker. It was pretty hilarious seeing her burst out of the locker room screaming in terror.
Miko patted you on the shoulder, “What’s up buddy, looks like you passed. I don’t know what’s worse getting munched on by some stray digimon or sitting through one of Ms. Kaizawa’s classes?” You both chuckle. Miko had told you that digimon sometimes prey on humans. If you weren’t their tamer you were a possible target. He said they were mostly rabid beasts who would turn you into mince meat the minute you pissed them off. And you believed him since the media and all of your classmates had told you that for a majority of your life. You remember when you saw a digimon in one of the parks. You and Miko were drinking, messing with each other and joking in the park. It was late at night and you saw something pass you, you took out your phone for better lighting and saw something peering at you two in the bushes, it looked scaly and reptilian. You both ran as fast as possible, knowing full well most digimon are far superior to humans physically, if you wanted to get away you’d have to run like you’d never run before.
As you think back to that you think about how strange this whole situation is, how they would make real life monsters out of what was basically an over-glorified trading card game. As the thought passes through your head you hear a police siren and see a police car slowly pulling up to you. You openly groan as the police car stops in front of you two in the corner and the driver rolls their window down. As you had both guessed it was Officer Nonaka… or as you liked to called her Officer Know-Nothing. The tall red headed woman peered at you two, “How are you boys? Staying out of trouble I hope.” You mumble, “Fine.” Officer Nonaka raises an eyebrow, “Well that’s good to here. Where are you off to?” This is what annoyed you about her, she was so nosey and demanding. You always tried your best not to piss her off too much though. She looked like the kind of woman who could take down a pro wrestler and would have no problem pistol whipping a kid if he was a criminal and a wise ass to boot. She may be skinny, but her looks could kill, mutilate and stuff what’s left of you in a garbage bag. “To the park to do homework,” Miko butts in. Officer Nonaka grins at this, “That’s out of character for the both of you. But hey… if you’re doing something productive, none of that petty criminal shit then who am I to get in your way. Have a good day boys.” The lady officer rolled up her window and sped off down the street. You growled, ‘what a hypocrite, she’ll bust our asses for the simplest thing but what does she do? Speed, drink, and name drop her police chief husband whenever someone questions her authority. If it wasn’t for Mr. Matsuki she’d be a nobody.’
As Rika drove off in her police car she sighed heavily. Life had been so boring after Renamon left. Digimon of all kinds pretty much became the subject of everyone’s hatred, even though they were the ones that saved the city and frankly… probably the entire human race. It was like the end of a superhero movie where the hero saves the city and then the city wants to sue or imprison said hero for property damage. Screw property damage, those digimon saved their lives and homes… well most of the homes. The whole ‘digimon prey on humans’ thing was made up just to scare people and get the public behind sending them all back to the digital world. Even though she couldn’t do anything about it, and certainly couldn’t change government policy on her own, she knew it was a bad idea. What if there was another D-Reaper or a creature like it. Who would save the city then, certainly not the military. Now the most exciting thing in her life was following those troublemakers. She felt saddened, if only she had Renamon back, if only they could have adventures together again. She was such a sour child, if only she could go back and be a little different. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
