Chapter #5

For the Motherland

    by: Unknown
The journey continued onwards, now with the rain gone you could actually make decent progress at least. At this rate you'd manage to make it into the city at least before night fell, giving you time to search out your friend. Things were looking up, and as the car drove further it helped to make you forget recent events leading you here. You found yourself wondering exactly who your friend was. You didn't even know what they looked like, or anything else for that matter.

You decided to take your mind off it by focusing on the surrounding landscape. Although soon something strange caught your attention. A man walked along the side of the road, a hug sack slung over his shoulder and his hand out in the standard hitchhiker motion although he wasn't looking my way. He looked like a giant of a man, someone who could put a hole in a brick wall just by leaning on it. Although maybe you were overthinking it just a tad...

He certainly was big though, but you couldn't tell if it was muscle or fat. His heavy clothing looking more standard for cold climates then on the side of the road, although the sack seemed to have a strangely shaped object in it. You sigh during your approach before turning off onto the side of the road behind him. He didn't even seem to notice that you stopped behind him until you used your horn. He turned around halfway and was seemingly surprised at your presence but he smiled and walked over.

"Thank you, I thought I'd never get a ride." Immediately you noticed his thick Russian accent as he stops at your window. Now that you could observe him in a detail you noticed his braided beard that fell down to his chest was a chestnut brown colour, along with his slicked back hair. He seemed quite young, somewhere in his mid twenties with the lack of wrinkles around his face. His smile was warming and gave you a sense of security even though his now obviously muscular physique proved how dangerous he could be. You had no doubt that if he were to give you a bear hug in gratitude later he'd break your spine. He opened the door and bent down, pushing his massive frame into your car. The car lurched as he placed himself on the passenger seat with a grunt followed by his light chuckle. "Wasn't built for big men was it?"

"N-no, sorry I only got it awhile ago." you nervously replied but he just laughed.

"Don't take it seriously friend! I'm just glad to be off my feet for a while." He placed the sack at his feet and you thought you heard a slight snoring coming from it but told yourself it was just the engine

"So, where are you going?" you asked, hoping to get some information out of your mysterious passenger.

"Nearest city really, hoping to set up shop for services only I can provide. Name's Felix" He said with that same smile.

"Jack." you respond getting a small nod from him "Well I'm heading there too, wouldn't be too hard for me to drop you off somewhere." you say shrugging as you pull back onto the road.

"Great! Then I can pay you back for this later? I'm afraid I don't have any money on me at the moment." He said enthusiastically.

"You don't need to pay me back. Besides, if you have no money how are you planning on starting a business?" you ask with a sceptical glance his way.

"I have alternate ways of making money..." He said obviously wishing to change the subject. What, did he break kneecaps for a living or something? "Still, I feel like I owe you. So at least let me take you out for a drink." That same cheerful attitude coming back.

"Er, I don't drink." you say quickly hoping to not let on your age. Although you should have given him more credit.

"What, because you're under-age?" His smile widened "Pretty young to be driving without supervision aren't you?" What he said quickly made you uncomfortable. How did he know you were under-age? "Don't worry!" He laughed. "I'm not one to hear and tell, but my offer still stands. I'll drink you under the table in no time!"

"Thanks for the offer, I guess..." the ride soon became silent after that, with your guest happy to observe his thumbs to keep himself occupied. Although it didn't last for long.

"Say, you don't mind if I put some music on do you?" He asked reaching down to his feet where the sack laid.

"Not at all..." you reply, not really listening to what he said. You were too busy thinking about what your first move would be once you got to town. He smiled briskly before opening it away from your eyes. Looking around in it for a while before pulling a CD out, although you could have sworn you saw him mouth 'sorry' but you assumed this was just your in your mind. He slid the disk in with a brief click before all went silent.

Then the music played... and you were floored.

"Know this song do you?" He asked.

"Love Fool by the cardigans." you said, not sure if you were even sane anymore. How could someone who fit the the stereotype of manly men, like that song? Not to say it was bad, but just, wow. "But, why?"

"A man's allowed to like whatever he wants." he said before beginning to whistle the tune. You couldn't even speak so you decided to just focus on the road, lest you question your sanity even more. As the disc continued you found yourself getting more and more confused as sections of classical, electronic and rock assailed your ears. They weren't all bad but the fact they were all mixed in such a wide variety left you to wonder if he disliked any type of music, but it still made you laugh the whenever he tried to sing along.

Overall, the rest of the journey was pretty good. You pretty much stayed silent while he provided the entertainment. In fact you found yourself wishing it was longer as the city came into view on the horizon.

"Looks like the perfect place!" Felix chuckled making you smile. He was right, it looked like it was full of opportunities. Surely there would be a school for you here and after you'd finished with that you wouldn't be out of a job in a place like this! You took your time taking in the sights before Felix asked to be dropped off. You took him to the side of the Residential side of the city where he said a contact would be waiting. You thought about what the contact was for but decided against asking.

Soon, with night approaching, you found the place he was mentioning. It was a quiet cul-de-sac, nothing special to be honest. You didn't even see anyone on the street so you don't know why he'd ask you to bring him here...

"This is where I get off." He said picking up the sack again but not before putting a piece of paper on your dashboard. "My phone number, maybe we can arrange for that drink sometime eh?" He said with a chuckle before opening the door, but before he got out he took one last glance your way. "Unless, of course, you'd like to come with me for tonight?"

"Wouldn't I be interfering in your business?" you asked, shocked that you were hopeful he'd say no. He laughed.

"Not at all, it'd be a joy to have you along! Might even get to teach you a few things, might show you something few people in the world have ever seen. You don't know, neither do I, but that's the what makes chance fun!" His tone of voice egged you on but maybe you should just go search for your friend...

You have the following choices:

1. Go with Felix

*Noteb*
2. Search for your friend

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
