Chapter #4Jack my boy! by: Unknown You tapped your finger against the steering wheel, the rhythmic drumming helping to soothe your tension. Your stinging cheek enough to make sure you weren't going home any-time soon. You'd left the house a decent amount of time ago. Would your mother care enough to even call a search? You doubted it. Your opinions weren't wanted, especially not when you talked about her... drinking. This was the last straw though, Dad may have told you to take care of her but this was too much. The red light gave you time to contemplate your actions, you weren't overreacting this had happened too many times for that.
Every man has his breaking point... you told yourself. This whole event left a bad taste in your mouth, so much so you wanted to spit but that wouldn't be good for your car. You'd only gotten it a few months ago when you succeeded in getting your learners. Even then it took most of your savings and you weren't ready to stain anything in here just yet. Your dad had taught you how to drive so well, although thinking about him only made the atmosphere worse. You may have only had a Learners, but you looked older then you actually were. Enough so that many people had mistaken you for being a university student so you weren't worried about any police pulling you over.
You'd planned for this eventually, knowing that your will would eventually shatter. A friend of yours helped you with it, telling you that you could come to their town and they'd look out for you. True, you'd met them on the internet but that didn't matter. Whoever it was seemed to be the only one who cared about your troubles. The light switched and you began again, it'd be an overnight drive from what they'd told you. The texts sent between you two as you left confirming it. They sounded relieved that you were finally leaving but you still felt conflicted. But pushing those thoughts out of your head you soon made your way out of the rural town, heading on track to a much bigger city.
Suddenly, something wet hit your windshield, then another, then another.
"Great, just what I need." you mumbled as the rain began to fall. Turning on the Radio didn't do much as your window wipers struggled to cope with the seemingly endless waterfall descending on your car. You had to turn your lights on just to see five feet in front of you! Good god this just made you even more stressed, speaking of which... your eyes fell upon a small cylinder in your cup holder. It's all too familiar label read: Heart Medication
You'd been born with a weak heart, the genetics have it you guessed. Luckily for the first few years of your life it failed to bother you aside from the lack of energy but it soon came back, with a vengeance. You'd been in the hospital room so often you knew the amount of holes in the ceiling off by heart, although they gave you medication to stop such frequent visits. You'd taken it as soon as you got in the car due to the stress, maybe you should take another one just to be safe...
A blaring horn brought you back to the road as you were met with the blinding light of a trucks headlights. "Shit!" You yelled, throwing the car sideways, narrowly avoiding the logging truck the drove past without slowing. You swerved, struggling to gain control of the car on such a slippery surface, the poorly built road doing little to help. However, by quickly making small corrections as your father taught you, you managed to get relatively back on track. Taking a shaky breath as the beads of sweat rolled off your forehead in waves, even though it was so cold. Your hands were cold and clammy, locked in an death grip onto the steering wheel. Every moment seemed an eternity as you silently relived your worst nightmare...
A static punch in the constant music jarring you from your delirious state you focused back on the road. You needed a break, to start over.
"This is your chance, push those thoughts out of your head and get over it or you're going to lose it." You hissed at yourself, taking the moment to take a few calming breaths. You swore to yourself you'd stop being so jumpy. Your father said you were just attuned to the strange but you had a feeling he was just humouring you. Of course the dreary grey of the road ahead made you want to remember any happy memories you had, especially in case this went sour.
The rain seemed to be getting heavier the further you drove. Soon, you couldn't see even with the lights on. You sigh, deciding against pushing your luck in driving further, waiting until you were sure you couldn't continue. You pulled over, slowing down onto what seemed like Gravel. Pushing the seat back you pulled the key out of the ignition, barely hearing the rumbling stop over the heavy rain. Pulling the blanket from the back seat you wrapped it around yourself, hoping to keep whatever warmth was left in your body.
It was surprisingly easy for you to fall asleep with the thundering rain, drifting into the welcoming arms of unconsciousness. Although it didn't last long as the darkness you fell to began to form into shapes and colour. In this dream you found yourself looking out over a city at night, raging fires were the only source of light there. Police sirens and screams could be heard. Multiple people seemed to be behind me but I couldn't turn around. Fire engines and ambulances I already knew would be rushing to the scene but something in me told me they wouldn't get there.
"Is it time to make our move?" I heard a rough voice growl. I didn't answer, hearing him spit moments later. I saw out the corner of my vision someone standing at my side. Whoever it was stood taller then me but I couldn't make out by how much, it was heavily armoured like a knight and I felt an air of familiarity with them.
"This is getting out of hand..." Another, more feminine voice whispered. "Where are they?" I didn't know who she was mentioning but I had a feeling that whoever it was wasn't going to help. How I could just sit there and watch the city burn I don't know.
"They are doing more important things, girl. The Digital World is more important than your own." That same voice growled, it sounded more animal then human. Soon after his remark though, a loud thud could be heard along with his grunt.
"Don't speak to her that way you mutt!" Another female yelled.
"Minerva please calm down..." Someone timid sounding pleaded.
"Quiet! Jack needs to concentrate!" The knight next to you yelled.
"We're moving out." You said simply taking a step back. Turning around, all you could see were shadows, although you could make out the shapes of people you couldn't see any details. You still felt you knew them...
A rumbling woke you as another truck passed you. It seemed to be early morning, maybe just before dawn. What a strange dream, why did you feel like you knew those people? Given they could have been anyone but still...
You heard your phones ringtone go off and you brought it out of your pocket to see you had a message. From your friend no less.
Hey, you didn't get here last night, did something happen?
You chuckled, nice to know someone cared. Thinking about a way to reply you decided just to tell the truth.
Hey, don't worry I'm fine. Started raining last nite so I had to pull over, I'll be there soon :)
You sent it and stuffed it back in your jacket. Pulling the key from your pant pocket and sticking it in the ignition. Turning it to hear the comforting roar of the engine. "Good to know my car hasn't failed me." You allowed yourself a small smile at the new day as you set out again... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
