Ruthie held the broken mess that was her best friend close as she thought about what she could do to make things better. She was no miracle worker by any means but there just had to be something she could do to lift Edna's spirits, right?
As she racked her brain trying to figure out what that thing was, she remembered the flyers that were posted all over the school. In that moment she felt like a dunce. The school was throwing a Halloween party for the students at the old Voorhees residence.
That was it! Since it was a school function that meant everyone was invited and since everyone would be wearing costumes, no one would recognize Edna. It was perfect and she could probably pull a trick on Heather while she was there since there's no way Heather "Freaking" Miles would miss it.
"The costume party on Halloween night." Ruthie whispered into her friend's ear.
"What?" Edna sniffled. Had Ruthie said something? "Did you say something?"
The taller girl pulled back slightly so she could look the nerd girl in the eyes. "The school's throwing a costume party tomorrow night at the old Voorhees house on Hitchcock Street. Everyone will be there, and no one would recognize you."
Edna took off her glasses to wipe her eyes as she took in what her friend was saying. A costume party where everyone was invited, and no one would recognize her. She could go and... get her revenge.
"Everyone's going to be there." she whispered. Heather, her clique, the teachers, everyone. A small smile began to worm its way onto her face as she stared at the blurry blob that was Ruthie. She hugged her close before whispering in her ear, "You're the best."
"Was there ever any doubt?" she asked. She gently helped her friend to her feet; school having been long forgotten. "Why don't we skip today, huh? Do you have a costume?"
Did Edna have a costume? She shook her head. "No. Truth be told I forgot about the party because of... well, this."
She held up her failed device and both girls frowned. Ruthie was the first to recover though. "Come on. You said you didn't have a costume so were going to go buy you one."
Edna pocketed her ray. "Alright, but you're buying lunch later, I'm not very liquid right now."
Ruthie smiled. "Deal."
As both girls began to leave the forest, the geek girl thought about her great failure. She might not have gotten Heather today, but she would have everyone tomorrow night. Even if it killed her, she would have her revenge.
