“We should stick with your plan Arin,” Eric answered. “This world needs more peacemakers and it will be good to see my wife Carna.”
“A wise decision,” Arin answered but she turned away to hide the weak smile on her face. The mention of his wife reminded her that he wasn’t hers for the taking. She had only met him when he was out on the road so she had always pretended he wasn’t attached to anyone but the fantasy would soon be over.
Eric was surprised by how quiet the chatter box Arin was being on their journey but perhaps she was making plans so he didn’t want to disturb her thoughts. The path to his village was an easy journey because it was one he had taken many times before as he dropped off the bard. No road was safe in these northern land but it wasn’t usually monsters you had to fear here because even bandits didn’t like coming to this place. It was cold here and the people here were dangerous at the best of times so when someone tried to take what little they had, the barbarians became violent and deadly. Besides, there wasn’t usually much to take.
“What made you decide to marry Carna?” Arin broke the silence.
“The village elder,” Eric explained. “The spirit of the Wolverine wants heirs to host it if something should happen to me. As the most beautiful woman in our tribe, she was given to me to honor my service to the tribe.”
“An arranged marriage?”
“Yes, I have grown fond of her and I hope she feels the same for me but it is hard with my duties carrying me far from home, it is only rare moments I share with her. Large piles of gold are cold comfort on long winter nights.”
The half-elf liked that sentiment, it was one of the reasons she had moved away from her family’s palace to wild nature of the north. It had been rebellion at the uptight rules of the nobles that she was expected to follow but in time she had grown to love this land and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. She had built a home here but she wanted to add a family now.
