Marina decided to head back to the town to grab some more supplies because it was never a good idea to go when you are emotional and having to transform someone you had trusted and was a close friend. If the enemy did have access to the portal they would find a nasty surprise waiting for them. She had set up a trap for anyone accessing that portal that would give his forces an explosive surprise.
She would have to find another way to travel since she thought using the portal was too much risk. The fortunate news, fresh from a traveler, was that the armies of Dreze had suffered a recent setback when they tried to use a shortcut through the mountains. Unfortunately for them, they had disturbed the fire goddess of the mountain as she liked to be titled Keahi was a fearsome fire dragon and instead of paying her tribute they had tried to slay her. This did not please the ancient dragon who ruled the territory. The armies had suffered heavy losses from the battle and the stubborn nature of the Dreze wouldn’t allow him to leave the battle and find an easier path for invasion.
Dreze was likely to win in the end but he was likely to lose a large part of his forces in the effort because he wouldn’t want to risk himself in combat. It was likely to even turn back the army if the red dragon could hold out long enough. The thought assisting the dragon was one idea for her next move but the creature was likely to want some sort of tribute from her.
As she bought some supplies for the trip and wondered if she should try to gather a mercenary company in the south to assist her. Attacking the army from the back with the dragon at the front of them would lead to great results. It would be a large expenditure of money but she was likely to get a large reward from the King that should more than cover it.
The final plan that occurred to her was the most dangerous one to risk. Some of the mountains carried molten rock that could melt even the strongest metals. If she were to dig a tunnel, she could pour the lava down through the pass that most of the army was taking ending the threat of invasion but there were a lot of problems with the plan. It wasn’t just the dragon that was likely to oppose her plan as she would have to travel through monster filled lands by herself and the work was likely to be noticed by the creatures of the Underdark.
She was starting to feel better with a plan in hand to allow her to focus and her only wish as she sat at the Inn for a warm meal was that the town had better magical supplies. The herb shops goods were poor at best so she would have to look for things along the way which would delay her when she wasn’t sure how much time she had left.
