Hearing the plight of the guards Seras decided to help out the goodness of her heart or greed for the wealth lurking within those walls. The guards made her promise to just check on things and not take anything but a small cut of the treasure was sure to change their minds after several days without wages. She climbed the wall with the ease of many years of practice despite the bars being greased against such an attempt. Her clawed gloves and boots countered the intruder deterrent nicely, she thought, as she dropped a rope for Nasty Nick and moved down the other side.
No light illuminated any windows so she wasn’t sure where to look for signs of life but she decided the front door was the best place to start. The thief moved quickly to check some windows for movement as Nasty Nick grunted and cursed his way over the wall. All of the curtains had been drawn shut, the curtains were expensive but dated, a sign harder times had hit the family. Seras moved up to the door and rang the bell, she listened closely for the sound of footsteps approaching the door but none came even after several ringing of the bell. The sound just echoed through the empty halls of the mansion. After a quick check for traps, she turned the knob and swung the door open to beautiful marble floors within.
“Glad you could join me, did you stop off to have a drink?” Seras teased which drew a rude gesture from her friend.
“I would like to see you carry heavy metal armor and all of this muscle over a giant wall,” Nasty Nick complained.
“I have done a fine job carrying you all of our years together. Now, how about you do your job and get to work meat shield.”
He grumbled but went in first, providing cover as she scanned for threats and signs of what had happened in this place. If no one had answered the bell the odds were something very bad had happened here but was the danger still a threat to the warrior and the thief. It didn’t look like any of the expensive furnishings had been taken so it wasn’t likely they were dealing with simple burglary. No one had reported any strange noise from the place so whatever had happened occurred very quickly and took out the entire house. She sniffed the air but didn’t detect any scents of poison in the air.
There were rumors that Count Gunderson and his family had dealt in dark magic to get their wealth and power. Dark magic often had consequences and price that came back to bite the user in the rear. Magic would answer many of the questions about what had happened to this place especially if it was the culmination of generations of dark rituals.
She eyed the distant gate and wondered if she should get the guards or if she should continue to investigate the place with Nasty Nick.
