Investigate the city of Gunderson
by: Unknown
After a few hours of riding on the dirt roads in between the many crop fields and pastures around the capital, with pits that were barely visible under the moonlight, they reached the city of Gunderson. Which was founded by the family of Gunderson, near the coal and iron mines of Gunderson and with the Gunderson river flowing next to it making the trading of iron and the likes a breeze. Of course, the acting authority in the city was count Gunderson, like his father before him and his father before that. That said not all Gundersons were direct descendants and only the main line were eligible as heirs to the title of count, the rest had to settle for more mediocre professions and lives. A lot of people in the city carried the name Gunderson and many more were far nephews and cousins from the family, carrying their father's name instead of their mothers. But aside from the strangeness of how much children the family had had in the early centuries, they haven't been the weirdest bunch.
The mines haven't been producing as much as of late however, some blame the miners slacking off, others say they stumbled upon some ruins deep underground of the old dwarves of Gunderson and their automatons have flooded the narrow passages. There is a small bounty for whoever can figure it out, but nobody in the city made an effort for it yet, though some first signs of economic decline have become visible in the outer ring of the city.
The city is quite famous for its blacksmith district, it able to supply a quarter of the metal needed to arm the entire king's army on its own, while still having room for private requests. Some of the best craftsmen in the kingdom even live there, perhaps able to forge some great gear for the two travelers on a quest to help the kingdom.
A most unsettling occurrence these days, however, is the absence of government. Since the start of the week, the private estate in the middle of the city has gone dark, the gates are shut tight and nobody outside knows what count Gunderson is doing behind those bars. The guards outside of the premise haven't seen a coin in their pockets for many days and none of the guards inside respond, nor any of the other staff for that matter. Which is quite troubling since the gate only opens from the inside and nobody dares climb over the 4 meter high wall built around the estate.
