As you were about to walk away, you heard a voice coming from behind you.
"Fred? Is that you?" the voice asked.
Turning around to face the source of the voice, you were shocked to realize that these dolls weren't really dolls at all! They were three of your sister's closest friends, and they were all shrunken just like you were! Upon closer examination, you immediately recognized who they were: Sally, a cute 9 year old girl with curly red hair and glasses, Heather, a pretty 11 year old girl with long brown hair, and Alice, a tomboyish 10 year old girl with short black hair. You couldn't help but wonder why your sister's three best friends were shrunken down to 7 inches tall.
"Yeah, it's me. So, what are you three doing here? And more importantly, why are you so small?" You asked them.
The three girls looked at eachother and giggled before Alice placed her hand on top of your head and spoke up.
"It's a long story, little guy. And I don't think you're in the best position to be calling us small right now." She said, poking fun at the fact that you were an inch shorter than each of them. Alice always did love to tease you, and this was no different.
Brushing her hand away, you took a step back. It was somewhat awkward to discover that you now had to look up to meet the girls' eyes. Sure there was only a one inch difference between you and them, but at your current scale that one inch made a surprising difference. It was enough that the top of your head only came up to around their chins, and considering that at normal size these girls only came up to around your chest, the fact that they had any height advantage over you now felt a bit odd.
"I've got plenty of time. Please, just tell me what's going on here." You said.
"Alright then, I'll explain it." Sally said while adjusting her glasses. "You know how my parents are genius scientists and they invent all sorts of cool stuff."
You simply nodded. It was true, Sally's family was well known throughout the neighborhood for their brilliant inventions. Even Sally herself was incredibly smart for her age, and many people believed that she would grow up to be one of the greatest scientific minds in human history.
"Well, last week my dad gave me a box of gadgets that he couldn't get to work right and asked me to throw them away for him. One of them was a growth ray that would have been used to make food gigantic and end world hunger. The thing is, it didn't grow things at all. The ray ended up shrinking whatever it hit instead, so it was deemed a failure. Still, I thought that a shrink ray could be really useful if I could program it to grow things back to normal afterward. I mean, it would be so much easier to clean up my room if I could just shrink everything to save space. So I worked all night long to add a reverse function to the ray. In the end I got it to work just right, so yeah." Sally concluded.
"The next day, Sally showed us the shrink ray. Alice thought it might be fun for us to take turns shrinking eachother and playing all sorts of games together, so we decided to try it out. And she was right! When you're this small, the whole world is like one big playground! So we've been doing this every day since." Heather said.
"But isn't it dangerous being so tiny? I mean, we're the size of dolls right now. Who knows what could happen to us at this size!" You asked, still somewhat nervous.
"That's why we make sure to always leave one of us at full size. As long as we have someone to make sure nothing bad happens, there's nothing to worry about! Today was Maddie's turn to stay big." Alice said.
"But then where is she?"
"She just left to get some snacks for us to eat. She should be back any-"
And as if on cue, the door to the room swung open, and you watched in awe as the towering form of your little sister walked in. You were amazed by how massive she looked at your current size. Shutting the door behind her, Maddie strolled over to her bed and sat down, dropping a bowl of snack foods in front of her.
"Come on up, girls! I got the snacks!" She said energetically.
The three shrunken girls then walked past you and started climbing the bed sheets as fast as they could, seemingly racing eachother to see who would get up to the top first. Once all of them got up, you saw your sister pick up Sally and whisper something to her.
"Ummm, Sally, I think I should let you know... When I was on my way to get the snacks, the shrink ray fell out of my pocket and went off when it hit the ground. I think that it might have shrunken someone else... Have any other tiny people come into my room while I was gone?" Your sister asked nervously.
"Why don't you take a look down there and see for yourself." Sally said, pointing toward your location.
Taking Sally's advice, Maddie looked down to the side of her bed and saw you standing there. With a surprised look on her face, she reached down and scooped you up in her massive hand.
"Oh my gosh! Fred, is that you?! Awww, you look so cute and tiny!" Maddie said, gently placing you down next to the other three girls.
"Yeah, and you look totally massive from down here. Do you think that you could turn me back to normal now?"
"Hmmm... Let me think about that for a bit..." Maddie said with a playful grin forming on her face.
Maddie then took the shrink ray out of her pocket and started fiddling with it in her hands. After a few seconds of thinking, Maddie finally gave you her answer.
