With almost no time to act, Hansel made a difficult decision. It would do them no good if the both of them had gotten caught, and he figured if at least he could get away, he could think of a plan to free his sister and return. Her struggling would definitely hinder their escape.
With the footsteps nearing the door, he gently lowered his sister back down to the ground.
"Don't worry, I'll come back for you," he whispered in her ear and dashed for the trees, though he had a suspicion she hadn't listened.
He'd gotten away just in time. Just as he ducked behind a tree, he heard the creaking of an opening door, followed by the voice of an older woman. She couldn't make out her words from this distance, but she sounded...kindly, not malicious whatsoever.
Though that was probably one of her tricks; his father always talked about witches being tricksters, to get kids' trust.
The soft closing of a door sounded. He peeked around the tree trunk and saw neither the witch, or Gretel. He was on his own.
He swallowed, and sat back behind the tree. Time to plan...
