"You idiot!" Jack screamed as she tossed aside massive chunks of debris, the blue glow of her biotic aura distorting the the air. Multi-ton rocks were like pebbles to her. Nothing would get in her way, not now, when it was this important. She was surrounded by search crews, alien and human, picking through the ruins of London. People, veterans and civilians, sorting through the battle-scarred waste, looking for the fallen, searching for whatever pieces of their lives they could save or say goodbye to. Fuck them, she thought. Let them play around while the most important thing, the most important person was still missing.
"You fucking dumbass! You just had to...to" She stopped, her breaths labored. She hadn't eaten anything in hours and the biotics, especially when in her rage driven overdrive, burned through calories like nothing. But that wasn't the real reason she stopped. Tears welled under her eyes, washing over her smeared makeup and dirt stained cheeks. She couldn't say the words
You left me...You just had to go and...and die...
in the distance, the hulk of a Reaper groaned while an Alliance crane crew hauled it off of a building's metal skeleton, nothing compared to the sounds it had made when it was alive.
She'd been down here nonstop since the fighting ended. No victory party for her. She'd been the first one to start digging, always holding out for Shepard to walk over the ridge with a big dumb smile. Stupid of her, but she couldn't resist the thought. The alternative, was unthinkable...
She kicked a chunk of concrete. "Some big damn hero you turned out to be, leaving a girl all alone."
She couldn't stay here forever. She was neglecting her students. They'd fought harder than could ever be asked of kids their age, seen terrible things, lost friends. And here, she was, ignoring them and digging through the dirt.
She turned away, started down the rubble path back towards the relief camps. Another groan from the dead Reaper got her attention. Something caught her eye, under the demolished titan was a body, covered in blood and dirt and the remains of a melted black bodysuit.
Shepard coughed.
