Chapter #5Eating Competition by: Unknown A large table had been placed in a clearing at Sweet Apple Acres. At each of the two ends laid a large crate of apples, readily awaiting the two mares that would devour them. As it so happened, a major trading route was closed off due to unusually high roc activity, leaving Applejack with more apples than she could sell locally. Not wanting them to go to waste, she and Rainbow Dash decided on an impromptu eating contest.
Twilight took the role of judge, reviewing the scenario aloud as the other two mares took their seats. "Okay, here are the rules. Normally a winner would be declared based on how much food is consumed in a set time limit, but due to the circumstances, it will be based on how many apples are eaten before giving up." Saying it aloud gave Twilight a bad feeling about this contest. She was, after all, dealing with the two most stubborn ponies she knew. "You each have your own crate of apples. I've personally verified that each one contains the same amount of apples, both in quantity and overall mass. I will watch and keep score. Are you both ready?"
"Ah sure am, Twi!"
"Yeah, let's get this show on the road!"
"All right, on my mark you-" But the unicorn was interrupted by the starved mares munching away already, leaving her desperately grabbing for her scoreboard.
------
Several minutes in, neither Applejack nor Rainbow showed any signs of slowing down. "Wow, Applephack" Rainbow commented through a full mouth, "Thif waf one of the beft ideaf we had." Applejack simply nodded with an acknowledging 'Mmm'.
------
"Ya know, Rainbow, you ain't gonna be the fastest flier if you keep packing 'em away like that." The pegasus paused for only a moment. "Hah! Don't think you can win that easily! Even when I'm working off this," she said patting her slightly bulging belly, "I'll be seeing it as proof of how badly I beat you!"
Twilight only sighed, wishing she had enforced a time limit. Despite what enthusiasts of the 'sport' say, watching these two eat all morning was proving to be one of the most boring things imaginable.
------
"Hah! Done and done!" Rainbow rubbed her engorged stomach, the crate of apples now a thing of the past. "Well, AJ? Ready to call it quits?" Applejack took the time to swallow before answering, "Ah've only got three left! Just wait a sec." Dash watched intently as her opponent polished off her crate. "There, all gone. Guess it's a tie, huh?"
This was unacceptable to the pegasus. "Come on, there's gotta be a tiebreaker in case of something like this, right Twi?" They both looked to the unicorn in question, only to find that at some point she had fallen asleep. "Huh. Well we gotta find some way to settle this!" Applejack knew Rainbow well enough to know that she wouldn't drop the subject until, in her mind, there was a clear winner and loser.
And that was when an idea came to her. Upon retrospect, she would find it strange, perhaps blaming the thought on the competitive stress or postmeal bliss. But at the moment, it made perfect sense to her. She could prove right then and there that she had the bigger appetite! indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
