Cerys had always been rather reluctant to take too much form the Buttercombe Cafeteria; so all this buffet spread, while it did look good, she held back from. Something her new roommate did not seem to agree with.
“Hey what’s the matter, you’re no touching the desserts; they are amazing!” Hannah prompted, nudging the goth towards the richer and more decedent food.
“I…uh” Cerys stammered. She had been hesitant to touching the “fattier” foods ever since she had arrived, and it could all be traced back to her home life. Growing up, Cerys had never really got along with her mom, not without Cassandra Porter’s lack of trying though. “Oh you look just like me when I was your age” she had said during Cerys’s first day trying on her uniform for Buttercombe Academy, Cerys really wished she had not said that, before she simply disliked the uniform, now she detested it.
Cassandra Porter was a pleasant, warm and open woman, always going out of her way to help others. Like Cerys she also had long brown hair (until Cerys dyed hers black), a warm friendly smile and a slight button-nose. Unlike Cerys however Cassandra was extremely obese. She came from a town with an unnaturally high obesity rate, but even then she was still at the higher end of the scale, and had not lost as much as a pound of it. Her figure was very round and jolly, with a huge belly dominating her figure, with her massive matronly breasts perched on top. Her arms were like huge hams and her face as round as a bowling ball.
It was not like Cerys hated her mother being fat, she just…didn’t want to just turn into a carbon copy of her mom; this was Cerys’s life, not Cassandra’s.
“Come on, it’s not every day that they pull out the stops like this” Hannah prodded again, “I KNOW they do not add the Dragon-Fruit Crumble to the ordinary menu” at this Hannah pointed to a large crumbly pie with rid and green spikes jutting from its sides.
“Umm, I guess” Cerys relented, picking a pre-cut slice of the Banoffee pie onto her plate ”God why do the pre-made slices have to be so massive, looks like I took a quarter of the thing” Cerys thought to herself, expressing regret at the idea of chucking some of it away when she inevitably would not be able to finish it.
The pie would have to wait though as Cerys reached the social minefield of finding a seat to take. Many of the benches were already full or overflowing with occupants, leaving Cerys and her new tag-along to weave around to find a place. Narrowly avoiding getting squashed between a pair of adjacent backsides, Cerys spotted a pair of familiar faces.
“Cerys over here!” one of the girls called, gesturing for the goth to come take a seat. Picking up the pace, Cerys weaved her way through the hustle and bustle to take a seat next to her friends.
“Hey Cer, good to see ya” came the greeting of the girl who had not called Cerys over.
“Thought you had got distracted listening to music in your room…again” chuckled the other girl.
“And miss you guys? Not for the world” Cerys joked, before turning around to face her roommate, “Guys, this is Hannah, she is rooming with me this year.”
“Hi!” Hannah greeted, wiggling her free fingers not clutching her tray.
“Sup” greeted the first girl. She was certainly a sight to see; with her drastic undercut hairstyle tipped with a bloody-red color, copious amount of tattoos on her arms and numerous nose piercings & earrings (only visible on the shaved side of her head though) she sure stuck out from the crowd. “Name’s Spyke” the light-chocolate skinned girl introduced.
“Oh drop the *Spyke* moniker Violet, nobody’s gonna pick it up” the second girl butted in. This girl was less ott than her friend, but still rocked a punk look. The Japanese-American had messy shoulder-length hair, well built arms and a rather flat chest. “I’m Yumi” she introduced, a bit more politely than the other girl. Both were dressed in punk style, with Yumi in a white tank-top and ripped sleeveless denim jacket and Violet in a tight black tank-top decorated with some indiscernible metal band name that showed off her curvy figure.
“Why not go with Vio? Sounds like violent” Cerys pointed out to the red/black haired girl. At this Violet looked decidedly less miffed, she hated her name with a passion.
“Annnyway, how was your Summer vacation?” Yumi asked, turning to Cerys.
“Awful, as usual” Cerys eye-rolled as she sat down, “Mom kept on trying to use me as some kind of trophy to her friends, her *special daughter* that got into the big fancy private school.” Cerys rolled her fork around to illustrate her point before diving it into a pile of mashed potatoes, “Sho, how wash yoursh?”
“Well I managed to convince Ms Polluck and Ms Underwood to let me stay after last year’s…events” Yumi began, hissing the last word into her food as Hannah grew curious.
“Events?” the brunette repeated.
“Oh god you gotta tell her!” Violet laughed before jumping the gun, “Actually, can I do the honors?” At this Yumi simply shrugged, that was enough. “Basically this preppy bitch tried to get up in Yumi’s face and she gave her a black eye, like right here!” Violet demonstrated by almost prodding her table buddy in her own socket.
“Was no big deal, she had it coming” Yumi shrugged again.
“As for my Summer” Violet said, butting in, “I managed to get a ticket to a Screaming Demons concert!”At this Violet made the bull horns symbol with her hands and lolled her surprisingly long tongue out as far as it would go.
“Aww no way! They rarely do tours outside of Europe! You didn’t invite us?!” Cerys pouted.
“What? I said I only managed to get one ticket, those things are like gold-dust” Violet added quickly, trying to defend not inviting her friends to this seemingly once in a lifetime gig. “Hey I will try to get more next time something comes up, chill” Violet added before Yumi nudged her sharply in the ribs.
“Shhh, Polluck is going to make a speech, keep your trap shut, I ain’t getting in trouble on the first day”
And right on que, the plump yellow-clad form of Ms Polluck took to the podium located as far as possible from the group of friends. Waving her arms above her head, she began.
“Ladies! I welcome you all to Buttercombe Academy for growing girls! I am Headmistress Polluck, or Ms Polluck if you wish to call me that, I am so pleased that all of you chose our illustrious academy to perform your studies at, I hope our staff will hone your skills and train you for the wider world ahead!” she certainly had a flair for the dramatic… “Now, for those of you who are returning students there are a few changes, such as our Student Special Services system, which will now be openly accommodating to more of you than ever before, you shall never find yourself singled out at Buttercombe Academy, now on to other matters…” As the headteacher continued Violet leaned forward and whispered to her comrades.
“I heard that Rachel is the reason they did that, she got so fat they had to classify her as disabled” Violet snickered.
“Oh you are full of crap Violet” Yumi sighed, “I saw her earlier and she was walking around just fine”
“Hey I am just repeating what I heard” Violet replied, raising her hands in defense of her rumor-mongering. As the two bickered back and forth Ms Polluck called her speech to a close, to a rapturous applause.
“Hey Cerys” Hannah began as the clapping died down, “I am still hungry, want another bite?”
