"So, there's a layer cake, a bowl of chocolate-dipped strawberries, and an arrangement of pastries." Megan said. "Choose what you'd like, and let your creativity shine."
The girls looked at her quizzically.
"Come on, girls." Megan encouraged. "Grab a seat in the circle, and start to recreate the one that you'd most like to have. What will it be? That layer cake, with its moist cake and sweet cream cheese frosting? Those juicy strawberries, with a thick layer of bittersweet chocolate? Or those gigantic Danishes and cinnamon rolls, warm and dripping with gooey icing?"
A girl spoke up. It was Raquel, a senior. "Do we get to eat it when we're done?"
"As long as you put your best foot forward, we'll eat our subject material when you're done."
This seemed to satisfy the girls, and they set to work. Megan felt like she had made a breakthrough, even though she knew that she couldn't do this every week. She felt some regret over her tactics, because she was contributing to the girls' bad eating habits, but she remained positive, believing that she could perhaps start to get these girls interested in something other than food by stimulating a love of art.
She critiqued as they worked, pointing out the need for perspective and shading, and she could feel her energy growing as the girls put forth more effort than she had seen from them previously.
With 10 minutes to go in class, she collected their sketches.
"OK." Megan said. "It's all yours."
The girls dug in, and Megan was astonished at how it disappeared like crops amid a swarm of locusts.
The girls hardly spoke while they ate, but once they were done, they huddled.
Megan smiled. "What secrets are you girls telling?"
Raquel once again spoke for the group. "Well, you promised that we could choose next week's subject."
"I did." Megan said. "What did you decide?"
"We want to sketch you." Raquel said. "But you have to be..."
