I was hoping to ease into the day since my timetable gave me a free first period. But there was no smiling welcome in the teacher's lounge where, I had already noticed a certain coldness on my interview visit, just an irritated demand from Sarah the school secretary. "You're here at last, thank God. You are going to have to take coach Collins's gym lesson with your senior form, he's delayed by an emergency at home and won't be in until after lunch. I was hustled out of the lounge and pointed in the direction of the changing rooms, hardly having time to think or put down my briefcase. "Those boys will cause havoc if left unsupervised."
So I was already flustered as I entered the changing rooms to be confronted by a dozen boys, virtually men, staring at me in sullen surprise. I explained coach Collins's absence and tried to sound authoritative as I told them to use their time as best they could and I would be watching from the side of the gym. "Hey, that's no good" said a powerful looking black boy I learned was called Eugene. "We have a big game at the weekend and need a proper supervised workout. Coach has a folder in his office with the routines and he always leads us. You'd better get changed, we've wasted some minutes already."
"But I don't have any sports kit with me" I protested, conscious of sounding like a whiny 12 year old and feeling it with my slight frame which was being towered over by the boys in the team. A slightly shorter white boy Daniel spoke up. "Coach has a rule that anyone who forgets their kit has to do the class in their underwear." "That's right" confirmed the rest of the boys. "Um, I don't think it's really appropriate for me to do that" I stumbled, painfully aware that I was wearing tighty whitey underpants and no t-shirt on this warm day.
"Aw, come on sir, it's only us guys here" persisted Eugene, though I thought I detected and aside of "for now" from one of the others. "We really need this session and you don't want to get off on the wrong foot with coach Collins on your first day do you ?"
