Chapter #5

Check out the water slide.

Yuki made her way to the stationary line that led to the Skyscraper, doing her best to work her way up the line while remaining polite. Thankfully, Yuki's one-piece suit had a logo on it identifying her as a staff member and not someone trying to cut in line. After what felt like an eternity of making her way through the mass of people crowding the stairs, Yuki finally emerged at the top of the water slide. Just as she had suspected, a girl about Yuki's age was at the start of the slide, perfectly still aside from some slight trembling. Susan, the hapless employee posted at the top of the slide, was trying and failing to talk the young woman down.

"Please, ma'm, you're holding up the line! Just step aside and-" Susan tried to plead.

"If I move, I'll slip, then I'll go flying down that thing!" the girl whined, unmoved by Susan's pleas.

"Everything alright up here?" Yuki asked as she stepped up to the two. Susan looked at Yuki with a sigh of relief, happy to have some help, while the young woman barely seemed to register Yuki's arrival.

"Thank goodness you're here, Yuki!" Susan said. "I've been trying to get her to move for a bit now, but she just won't budge."

Susan was a nice enough girl, but she was not at all suited to calming people down. Her approach was too logical, trying to use rationality with people too out of their comfort zone to listen to reason. This did raise the question of why Susan had been posted up here, where she'd be completely useless in a situation such as this, but Yuki chalked it up to the staff being stretched too thin.

Wasting little time, Yuki gently tried to get the petrified girl's attention. "Excuse me, miss." Yuki began. "I know you're scared right now, but I'm telling you that everything is fine."

"It's not fine! Look how high up we are!" the young woman squealed, shaking her head.

"I know it's really high up, but there's nothing to worry about." Yuki said, keeping her voice calm while holding out a hand. "Come on. Take my hand, and let's get you back down these stairs and back to solid ground."

Thankfully, Yuki's words seemed to have made an impact. Carefully, the young woman turned her head to face Yuki, looking first at her face, then her hand, her eyes darting back and forth between the two for a few moments. Then, ever so slowly, the scared teenager reached out and grabbed Yuki's extended hand. Just as she began to turn away from the slide, however, things went wrong in a big way. Stepping in a puddle of water sitting on the plastic flooring of the slide, the young woman lost her balance and slipped! With a shriek, the young woman began to claw frantically at Yuki, trying desperately to keep herself from going down the slide.
