Tyler didn’t hear the deafening roar of the explosion so much as he was simply aware of its presence. It happened in an instant – one moment he was walking as normal, the next he was instinctively trying to pick himself up off the street, the roars of the world around him merely a muffled echo that sounded as if he was hearing from afar.
Between these moments his mind had only registered a handful of vivid tableaus. Here was a brilliant flash of white registering on his peripheral, followed by the thousand pieces of the white weatherboard house as it burst out in every direction, an enormous fountain of dirt erupting from where its foundations once lay. Then there was the scene of falling debris raining down from everywhere as he lay stunned on the road.
Tyler finally found his feet, but swayed uneasily as he witnessed the tail end of the devastation. Chunks of wood and metal rained down around him as the thick plume of dust slowed and settled, starting to swallow the scene as it descended. Traces of a far wall slowly buckled and collapsed outwardly onto the house next to it. And then there was nothing left of the structure at all, leaving only a settling pile of debris where it once stood.
Tyler took several uneasy steps backwards as seemingly the last of the debris plonked on the ground around him. It was a miracle that nothing had hit him, he realised as his senses began to return. The scene felt surreal, like a dream. He didn’t believe he was actually standing there.
Eventually a thought formed in his mind “What if someone was in there?” His instinct was to run from the scene, but the thought of possible survivors dragged him in, as unlikely as it would have first appeared. He coughed and squinted his eyes as the dust enveloped the space around him. The streetlights seemed unable to penetrate through the cloud as he stumbled towards the rubble in near darkness.
“Hello?!” he shouted ahead of him. Or at least he thought he did. He barely even heard his muffled voice through the ringing in his ears. He fumbled through the wreckage with near zero visibility, realising that it was a largely helpless, and very probably stupid undertaking to attempt.
