“Twenty six dollars and ninety nine cents, thank you.” A new year, a new apartment. After his lunkheaded roommate flunked out last semester, Marcus found he was only able to afford a stunningly drab building with no view, no decoration, and no fun. Most of the time, he decided to hang with friends to escape the sheer boredom of his sanctuary, but there were some things he could only do at home. To liven the place up, he had decided to visit the antique shop and pick up some exotic piece of the old world to add an air of mystery to his apartment. He had picked out a strange brass orb, warm to the touch and inscribed with bizarre and arcane symbols. It looked cool, as far as he was concerned, so he figured he’d buy the thing and put it on his coffee table. Marcus passed a fistful of cash to the shopkeeper, an elderly fox wearing a faded purple suit who just wouldn’t stop grinning his wry grin. With the vague, ominous feeling that he had just been scammed, Marcus took his change and his mysterious ball home with him.
A short walk home brought the ‘roo back, climbing up several stories to his door. He slipped himself in and set the antique on his table, admiring how it glowed softly in the middle of the room. A good purchase, he thought to himself! Marcus left the orb sitting quietly on the table as he went to the kitchen to make himself something to eat, unaware that deep within the sphere something was stirring. Having laid dormant for centuries, a powerful force awoke with Marcus’ life force prodding it gently. Slowly it gained awareness of the dingy apartment it was held within, plotting and planning its next move while Marcus chopped up some vegetation in the other room. The marsupial finished up, inelegantly plonking his food down on the table and switching the TV on, putting his large, valuable paws up on the coffee table next to the orb. He had to look out for those puppies, being that they defined his football career! As he ate, watching the mindless drivel spewing forth from the television, he sighed with boredom. There wasn’t anything good on the sports channel, boring reality TV crap on the mainstream channels, rerun after rerun on the comedy channel... he glanced around his room, finding his laptop laid under a vest that smelt vaguely like the locker room. Throwing it across the room with a grimace, he picked up the computer, deciding to log on and check out some more... sensual material. If nothing else, it’d cure his boredom.
He yawned as he checked out his usual series of sites, clicking through the same old tired shit. His circle of friends, all of whom were generally bigger and more outgoing than the relatively meek marsupial, tended to dominate the field when they were all out on the town, meaning Marcus came home alone more often than he liked. This hadn’t done wonders for his porn browsing habits – he was so desensitised to everything he saw! With a frustrated grunt, Marcus wondered if he had really seen everything, moving to close the page he was on when something caught his eye. In a thumbnail, a stunningly attractive gryphon leered at him, her body the image of aggressive femininity. His attention suitably captured, he loaded up the video with a grin, loosening his belt in preparation. Marcus watched entranced, unable to stop himself pawing vigorously at his throbbing member as the sultry gryphon gracefully flitted across the screen, sensually playing with herself and posing for the world to see. Hypnotised, Marcus didn’t notice his paw creeping across the table, as an errant jerk of his leg sent the brassy orb falling to the floor.
What he did notice was the awful racket it made as it shattered, cracking against a table leg and exploding into thousands of pieces. It sounded as though the heavens themselves were sundered, a large cracking noise booming through his apartment and startling him from his reverie. As he looked around the dingy room, worried, he felt a peculiar sensation grab him deep within his chest, as though someone was ripping his heart right out. He gasped, breathless, as strange energy flooded into his body and a whispering voice called out to him...
