Well, as down as you can with her this close to you. Her face is still an inch away from you. That's... a little freaky by itself. "You fuck people to death and take their souls?"
"Uh, you make it sound so terrible?" She says rolling her eyes. "And we don't take their souls. That's a misconception. We're supposed to keep the guys in check, you know. Well girls too." She blinks. "Well, I haven't, but I've seen them... Wait, where was I going with this?"
"You were saying to don't take souls?" You manage, a chill running up your spine. For once you aren't stammering in front of a girl. You aren't sure whether that's a good thing or a terrible one.
"Oh right. We're... uh. What's the human term. Shepherds! That's it. We keep the flock in check. Heh, and have fun doing it. Well, we might use them to keep ourselves going, but we live a long time anyway. It's complicated. But we're supposed to look after the ones who are sexual deviants, the perverts. You know. Those that like taking, but no giving, and giving them a taste of their own medicine. That is the right phrase isn't it? I sometimes get them muddled up. I spent ages learning those things!"
"You... use them to keep yourselves going. You mean, you suck energy from them?"
"They don't miss it!" She said, pulling back a little finally, sulking. "Besides I... uh.. well I got too involved. Uh... It's kinda silly. I... we're supposed to make them pay for what they've done. I... was too into just enjoying myself. And them. It. Got out of hand." She pouted. "Now I'm under a Geas. I'm supposed to see what it's like on the other side for two hundred and fifty years. I'm supposed to be human. Heck, I've only been here a year and already had to move schools! Now. First day. FIRST DAY! And... and..." She blinks. "Was I shouting?"
"Actually more squeaking." You say.
"Uh. I was trying to whisper. But how did you find me out so quickly?"
"You said 'I'm totally a human girl.' " You said honestly. "We really don't refer to ourselves as human. Just people. If we knew of another sentient race then maybe we would, but... we just don't."
She blinks again.
"Oh. Well that's embarrassing. I never even thought of that. That does kinda explains that boy and why he screamed. Well, not quite why he screamed exactly. That was something else."
Oh, you really can't leave that be.
"OK, I'll bite. Why does it explain it, and why did he scream?"
She raises an eyebrow.
"Weeeell..."   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
