I tell him that he and his friends should make a purchase and leave or just leave, it was their choice.
"Spikey" starts laughing and says, "Who do you think you are telling us what to do?"
"Well guess what little cashier man." This is a franchise store and I know franchise store policy. No resistance, no heroics, give us all your money when we ask for it - which is now - don't follow us out to get a license number, lock the door after we leave before you call the cops." "Have I got all that right from the franchise handbook.?"
"Yes sir", I said.
"Then hand us over the money he snarled.
"Do you have a weapon of any kind? I asked politely
"Just this little .22 ", he said as he whipped out the gun of choice used by women because it was so light and had little kick.
"Right away sir", I said as I handed him the money from the cash drawer.
He snarled and said, $40. stinkin' bucks". he yelled.
I said, "you know the handbook says we have to put excess cash in a drop safe."
"Oh yeah", he said. "I forgot. You can give me that money too." The others were getting very anxious and begging "spikey" to just leave. He said, "you guys go on, we'll meet back at my house." The others left knowing what was likely to happen now that the gun had been pulled. They grabbed a couple of sixpacks and some cigadettes and walked out the door.
He gestured with the gun and said. "I also remembered you have the key to the drop safe. Open it."
I bent to do so and pulled out a key to unlock the drop safe. I reached in with my back to him and grabbed hold of my snub nose thirty eight. I knew he still had his gun out pointing at me so I reached in with my other hand and wrapped several bills so the gun was hidden. I turned and calmly shot him in the chest. He fell to the floor and I calmly kicked the gun away. He looked up at me gasping, "Why?"
"I guess you didn't read the introduction to the handbook. We have strange laws. If a man gets caught robbing a store, they can get up to 20 years. If they use a gun, the sentence is 3-9 years. Kinda encourages them to bring a gun. The odds of getting caught go way down if they kill the only witness, in your case, me. "Spikey" it just came down to did I want to lose my job or my life. My life stinks but not as much as this job." He raised up and I said, "I'll call an ambulance for you" as I shot him through the heart this time... and I did. I called the police after that and everything was over by the time my shift was. I thought of Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and was glad that I was black and "Spikey" was white. The other way around, I probably would've gone to trial with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson shouting how racist I was..
