Chapter #2

Teresa, Jackie's 47 year old mom.

Jackie's mom Teresa (Terri) Driscoll got divorced almost ten years ago, just when Jackie was 17 and in her senior year at high school. To compensate for the divorce, Terri put all her effort into bonding with Jackie and her sister, Judy, who was only seven at the time. They all grew very close especially since Terri and Jackie were almost mirror images of each other and they still are. Terri has the figure of a twenty-seven year old with only a slight indication of age in her face and hands only noticeable up close and only when she doesn't use face and hand lotion. This allows Terri to fit in wherever they go or whatever they do together, and they do a lot together. Jackie considers her as much a sister as mother, and many believe Terri is Jackie's sister.

You first met Jackie and Terri at the same time and place and even flirted a bit with Terri until you completely fell under Jackie's spell. Terri and you get along fabulously, and the three of you often go out together. Terri is more adventuresome pushing you and Jackie to try new things and places particularly for dancing. You often are left exhausted after an evening with them since once one would tire, the other would keep you on the floor all night.

Not only do they look alike, Terri's voice is identical to Jackie's, or really you guess Jackie's is identical to her mother's. You sometimes forget when calling their home phone if Jackie doesn't pick up her cell, and you will talk to Terri lovingly while she lets you go on until finally telling you it is her. She likes playing little games like that and even got herself an identical New Year's costume to Jackie when the three of you went out last year. You had to be alert all evening, but finally gave up. Fortunately, it was Jackie you kissed at midnight although you gave Terri a little kiss right after.

Jackie has let Terri do most of the wedding planning and decisions since Terri never got a real wedding herself. Terri had run off with her boyfriend and gotten married after her parents refused to give her a wedding because she was pregnant with Jackie. Jackie told you that she wanted her mother to be just as involved and only wished that Terri could be as happy as she was going to be as the bride marrying you.

Not sure what caused the bright flash that blinded you for several seconds, you look around to see if a light blew or what and only become aware of how quiet it is when you look back and see Jackie and Terri staring at each other as if in shock. They usually are immediate chatterboxes when they see each other, and their strange silence leaves you at a loss.

"Hey. Are you two OK?" you ask after watching them touch each others cheek in slow motion then step over in front of the mirror together like mimes practicing synchronization.

Confused that neither answered, you walk over between them and put an arm around each. "I know I'm not suppose to be in here before the wedding, but do you have to pretend I don't exist?" you chide them with a smile.

They both turn to you with looks of concern that make a shiver run up your spine. You feel that something is very wrong, and it makes you nervous and scared.

"Are, a, ... are you two playing some sort of a, ... game on me?" you sputter trying to regain your composure. They've tried to deceive you before although you wonder why now since this isn't the best time for it.

"Gerry, who ... am I?" Terri's voice trembles as she asks.

"You're my future bride-to-be ..." you pause, "... be's mother, of course, Terri," you chuckle, but that happiness drains from you as Terri's face turns pale and frightened as you speak. "Terri, what's the matter?" you plead then turn to Jackie and ask, "What's wrong? Jackie, what's going on?"

You feel a lump swell in your gut as you get really scared this time seeing Jackie's face only slightly less concerned. As you wait for answers glancing back and forth, Terri begins to break down and cry, and you take her in your arms.

"It must be nerves finally catching up with her," you think as you tell her. "It's OK. Everything will be alright. The wedding is going to be perfect, you'll ..."

"NO! IT WON'T!" she pushes herself back and shouts in your face tears now staining her makeup. "How could this happen? I can't get married like this."

You blink and shake your head trying to figure this one out and finally say, "What?"

"Gerry," Jackie's voice comes from behind as she puts her hand on your shoulder. "There's been some sort of accident. Somehow, Jackie and I have switched body's. I'm really Terri. She's Jackie."

"Quit teasing me, you two. This is some sort of pre-wedding gag, right?" you nervously respond. "Now both of you say, "Just Kidding." OK?"

Terri begins to wail and falls into your arms. You hold her again and try to calm her with soothing words but avoid mentioning the wedding.

"I know it's hard, if not impossible to believe, Gerry, but it's true," you heard Jackie's voice.

Suddenly Terri rises up from your arms and screams, "The orb. Where's the orb? That's what it must have been."

You all turn to the floor by the door where there are shattered pieces of glass reflecting or glowing in a rainbow of colors. Terri's body drops to her knees in front of it sobbing profusely again and again, "NO. No. No, no, no, no."

"That thing did this?" you puzzle out loud.

"It looks like it actually works like it said." comes from the Jackie with Terri inside.

"And now it's broken, and I can't get married. We have to cancel," comes another wail from the body of Terri that supposedly now has your fiancee’s mind.

"People are already arriving. How can we call this off?" you start to rant in a panic turning to the Jackie body. You need to do something but aren't thinking clearly as you react desperately. "Maybe we can say Jackie got ill. Can you start throwing up? What if you fell and got knocked unconscious or were cut by this glass." You reach down and pick up a piece and start to slash at Jackie's body.

"Gerry! Jackie! Get a grip," she says backing away from your attempts to slice her up. "You don't want to hurt me, so put that down. All is not lost. We can still go through with this and then find a way to fix it.
