Two weeks after Gwen became the surrogate, Rhys walked into their apartment.
"Hey, Jack and the gang are curious about how your feeling now that the morning sickness has worn off." he said, walking though the door. "That and, my mum wants to know why you couldn't make it to lunch today. I wanted to tell her you decided to be a surrogate for a friend of ours, but i then i decided it wasn't a good idea to tell her you'd be carrying it for five months longer than-"
He walked in on his wife sitting on the couch, watching TV, with a slice of pizza in her hand. He also noticed an empty, medium sized pizza box on his coffee table. In only half a second, he managed to put two and two together.
Gwen looked up at Rhys, and it occurred to him that she didn't even notice the empty pizza box. "You can tell them i"m okay with this now. Onto telling our mums and dads, telling them i'll be pregnant for thirteen more months will be our greatest challenge."
Rhys looked at Gwen. "So... you ordered pizza?"
"Oh, yeah," Gwen said, taking a bite of her slice. "I did. You want a slice?"
"I can't." Rhys answered.
"Why not?"
"Because you already ate the whole thing."
"What?" Gwen laughed. "Oh, come on, Rhys. Stop joke-"
She turned and saw that he was right. Only then did three things dawn on Gwen. One, the phase where she ate a lot had started. Two, she was full from all the pizza. And three, she had just finished the last slice.
"Oh, my god." Gwen said. "Jack was right. This did start fast." Then she started tearing up. "And i was hoping i could last a little longer on not feeling like i was a fat cow!"
Rhys sat down next to her, put his arms around her, and she cried into his shoulder.
"There, there, Gwen." Rhys said as he patted her back. "Just remember one thing. No matter how big you get, or how much weight you gain, you are and always will be Gwen Cooper. My amazing, beautiful, spectacular wife."
Gwen pulled back from the hug with tears in her eyes, and a smile on her face. Then, unexpectedly, she kissed Rhys right on the lips. He was a little surprised at first, bet then he settled into it.
She pulled back. "Thank you so much, Rhys. I really needed to hear that. You really don't know how much that meant to me."
"No problem," Rhys said. "But you are going to have to promise me something."
"What?" Gwen asked.
"Next time you order pizza, can you save at least one slice for me?"
Gwen smiled. "I'll try. But i can't make any promises."
I'll have her weigh herself next. Choose which one.
