Chapter #10

Museum Musings

Katie said bye to Angie as they diverged paths in the parking garage. She was struggling with how her body felt: on one hand, something in her told her it felt nice, which it kind of did, on the other, she had gained weight somehow. She knew she would've gotten bigger bras the second she needed to, they had been the same size since 9th grade for crying out loud. And her hips! She had always wanted wider hips! She had always been so skinny--

--Because she wanted to be.

Katie stared at herself in the reflection of her car's window.

"What is going on? I came to terms with my body during college, and now that it's all falling apart?" She unlocked her car and got in. "Why would putting on a little weight cause this?" she put her purse in the passenger seat and then saw it. "You're why." she said at the statue. It simply stared back, It's round chubby face not caring what she had to say to it. "I'm going to get rid of you." she spoke at it, pulling out of the garage and towards the museum in town. The drive there was a bit odd. It was, of course, rush hour, but every time she came to a stop in traffic was in front of some fast food place or drive-thru or something, just a simple turn would've given her something to eat, and she was starting to get hungry again.

~~~
Katie hurriedly walked into the museum, they were closing soon, because why not, and she wanted this thing gone from her life as soon as possible. She approached the desk where a middle-aged woman looked up at her
"Tours are over, we'll be closing soon, ma'am." she said, her name tag read 'Susan'
"Susan, I want to make a donation." Katie said, catching her breath a little as she reached the desk, the bag with the statue swinging against her leg a little.
"Oh! Really? How much?" Susan smiled as she went to dig out a form for her to fill out
"Not monetary, and artifact." Katie replied, feeling her stomach gnaw at her to eat something.
"Oh, well, uhm..." Susan clicked through her computer for a bit. "Go see Mr. Evansborough, his office is through that door and on the right." she pointed to a door labelled 'Offices'. "His name will be on the door."
"Thank you!" Katie said as she went over and through the door. She watched the signs on the doors, She passed four doors before something caught her attention: a box of donuts in the breakroom. She stopped in her tracks, her stomach growled. But! She had to focus! But one donut wouldn't hurt, maybe two. Okay, a third one was a little much, she didn't even work here, but--
Katie snapped out of her trance as her hand reached for another donut but found nothing. Had it been a full box or a partial? How many exactly did she eat? She didn't know and that really bothered her.
"Why can't I control myself?" she asked herself before being startled.
"Can I help you?" Katie jumped and turned around, seeing a grey haired man with a long mustache standing in the doorway of the breakroom
"I'm looking for Mr. Evansborough?" Katie responded, wiping her hand on a napkin
"That's me, were you looking for me in that box of donuts?"
"n-No, I just got distracted and.. couldn't.. stop myself.." Katie trailed off slightly
"Ah, don't worry about it." He replied in a cherry voice, "Have a seat, what can I help you with?" he clasped his leather hands together.
"I want to donate- or at least learn more about- this." Katie sat across from him and set her bag on the table, taking out the statue and facing it towards him.
"Oh my..." he said in a low voice as she gingerly turned the piece before putting on some glasses to look at it further. "Where did you get this?"
"From a second hand shop on the square, real hole in the wall kind of place. They said it came from the Luckman estate. Er, that one of the Luckman's themselves sold it to them."
"I don't recall seeing a second hand store on the square, but it's been a while since I've been there." he said as he inspected the base. "How long have you had it?"
"A little over a day now."
"Hmm" he responded. "Wait here, I need to show this to some of my colleges." he took the statue and walked out with it. Katie sighed, not having to be near that thing was a relief, and it seemed promising that he wanted a second opinion!
