Then she said she saw something move into the discarded cup, he just laughed and said it was probably a thirsty mouse as they kept walking by. I let out a huge sigh of relief and regained my composure before I headed out again on my journey.
I stuck my head out of the giant drink cup and looked around, no one in sight. I crawled out, stood up and felt all sticky now. Mountain Dew was what he was drinking and now I was covered with the remains. I picked up one of the huge ice cubes laying next to me and rubbed it all over my body. Woohoo, was that cold! But at least I was somewhat clean and not as sticky. So I started running, that would warm me up I thought. I ran right across the street, around a drain, and rested against the curb. I now knew that I had 2 full blocks to travel and the armory was in the third block. I was hoping to get there during the night as I didn’t know where I would take refuge during the day.
I kept going on my way, walking around drains, hiding from cars, hopping over a couple of crumpled beer cans. I even took a bite off a discarded apple core that must have been thrown away less than an hour ago because it still looked and tasted somewhat okay. I didn’t realize how messy people are, and there is a trash can on the corner!
I must have been on my journey for several hours already and was getting tired and thirsty. I thought I’d just sit for awhile and rest.
About a minute later I heard a truck approaching and the driver turned on its sprayers. It was washing the street and releasing thousands of gallons of water and heading right for me! I didn’t have anytime to think! Next I know I’m flowing downhill along with trash, leaves, some rocks, and tons of water! There was nothing for me to grab or hold on to to pull myself away from the water flow. I looked downhill and to my horror everything was heading for the storm drain! “Oh, no”, I yelled, to no avail. The drain was approaching rapidly and I grabbed onto a tree twig, a branch at my size, and as I got to the drain I turned it crosswise against the drain slots and held on for dear life! After a few minutes, the water finally subsided and I pulled myself up and away from the trash laden drain. I can tell you one thing, I was NOT thirsty anymore!
I was tired, exhausted, and cold. At least I still had my homemade loin cloth around my waist. I took it off, wrung it out and put it back on. The other thing that was good was that the water flow took me closer to my destination. Yay, I thought. I wanted to get away from that creepy drain so I stepped around it and ran across the next street to the other side and sat down. Now I only had one full block to go and the armory is in the next block. I figured by now it must be 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning and I shouldn’t see many people or cars for awhile.
Just when I seemed to be dozing off, I heard a very loud brushing noise. I looked to my left and saw a monstrous street sweeper coming around the corner! I didn’t have much time! I jumped and pulled myself up onto the top of the curb and hid behind a fire hydrant. I covered my ears as it went roaring by spraying some water on me too. I looked up at the driver and he was hanging his right arm out the window and he had his head out too looking down to make sure he was close to the curb. At one point it looked as if he spotted me standing next to the hydrant but I am too small to be noticed I figured. A second later he stopped the cleaner, opened the door, and hopped out!
