It has been three years since Mark Allen first entered college. The 21-year-old is still living with his 40-year-old mother and two siblings, 22-year-old Monique and 16-year-old Max. His father moved away when he was young.
Mark’s routine is similar for every one of four days of the week. After breakfast, he travels into the college for study. The amount of time he spends in the college depends on the number of one-hour classes he has and the time in between. Between 11am and 1pm, he goes to the college canteen for lunch. Usually, it’s a packed lunch prepared earlier that day by his mother, but once a week he actually buys food from the canteen. At the end of the day, he goes home to dinner. Today will be very different.
On this particular day, Mark is heading towards the canteen when he hears someone saying they’ve spotted something. Amongst a crowd of college students and staff who have reacted to this, he notices they are looking up at something, as if that person had noticed that object. He looks up himself and sees a large object, which appears to have covered the campus. It might even be bigger, because he’s not seeing all of it. A minute of looking up at the object passes before Mark and the others are blinded by a flash of light.
When Mark comes to, he is in a strange room, laying on some table. He sits up. He hears strange noises and the sounds of people screaming. Based on a globe with blobs on it that he sees in the room, it looks like it is not just his college that’s going through this; the populations of dozens of cities around the world (including New York, London, Paris, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Moscow, Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, Mumbai, New Delhi, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney) have somehow been taken to be put through this, and there are more places lined up. He barely has time to react when something makes him lay back. His vision catches sight of some probe coming towards him. He passes out again.
Mark comes to again, this time back on the campus grounds, but he has a feeling that his body is gone. He notices parts of the people who were around him all over the place, also deposited by whatever took him. But are their heads there, or are their bodies there?
