Carl struggled to believe what he was reading, an invitation to a school of magic? what?
He would have thought this was an elaborate prank, but had to concede reasonable doubt when he saw the kind of effects that came with the letter, displaying some sort of shiny hologram that would be quite hard to produce with current technology and, well, he didn't really know anyone that would go to such lengths just to fool him. He just wasn't that popular and barely talked with any of the few rich students at his school that could maybe be able to create something like this.
"It is our pleasure to extend you an invitation to enroll at the Gamerra Institute of Magic, the premium magic school in the country" the letter said. It wasn't addressed to him in particular which was strange, but the letter asserted how the person receiving it was deemed as "bursting with magic potential" and "talented enough" to discover a world inaccesible to most mortals. The hologram proudly showed a medieval looking logo, what seemed to be a medieval castle and a set of instructions that apparently involved walking through a train tunnel at a quite specific interval of time.
Carl scratched his head, feeling the childlike excitement of being able to discover what seemed to be a hidden world full of mysteries but wondering what did they mean with magic potential. He didn't really remember anything that suggested he had some sort of supernatural power, talent for the occult or anything of the sort. No freak accidents that couldn't be explained by the nature of topics that he learned at school, no strange experiences with non human entities, not even weird dreams now that he thought about it. Was the letter actually addresed to him then? And if it was, what kind of magical power was hidden within him?
Naturally, any sort of research about Gamerra was fruitless, all he found was some strange, incomplete and fairly bad written fictional stories and not much else. But as the date of the supposed deadline to cross the portal got closer, Carl knew he at least had to attempt going there, even if it was an elaborate prank which he highly doubted, it looked like the opportunity of a lifetime to explore a new world, something that he just couldn't say no to.
With his few belongings in a bag, he wasted the entire day reaching the tunnel and his eyes shined with excitement when he saw a bright light materialize out of nowhere. Hoping for the best Carl started running towards the strange source of light.
